The exciting news: since the 2017 Girls’ Index?, overall rates of girls’ interest in STEM has increased from 45% to 55%. The greatest gains were among the 5th and 6th grade girls, with nearly 20% more reporting STEM interest. The concerning news: since 2017, girls are less likely to believe they are good at STEM subjects such as math and science. Currently 59% of girls believe they are good at math and science, down from 73% in 2017. So, what can we do? A lot, actually! On Monday, Lisa Hinkelman, Ph.D. delivered a crucial address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Goals House. The event titled “The Mental Health Crisis Affecting Girls” shed light on the urgent challenges facing young women worldwide, and played a key role in addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of gender equality. Dr. Hinkelman shared findings from The Girls’ Index? as well as evidence-based solutions from ROX program outcome data with nearly 50,000 girls. She urged the audience of internationally renowned advocates, thinkers, political figures, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to take action to help change the future for girls. "Our research shows a sharp decline in girls' confidence, intense social pressures, and a troubling lack of belonging and connection at school," said Dr. Hinkelman. "The future of our girls - and by extension, the future of our world - depends on our willingness to listen, understand, and act. It depends on our commitment to invest in girls, to provide them with the support and resources they need to flourish so that we create a ripple effect that benefits families, communities, and entire nations. We need urgent, targeted interventions to support girls' mental health and well-being." The Girls' Index? findings underscore the critical need for the change-makers at Goals House to collaborate on policies, programs and funding strategies that prioritize the needs of women and girls. Honored to have addressed the United Nations General Assembly today on the critical issue of girls' mental health. I was invited to shared insights from The Ruling Our eXperiences, Inc. (ROX) Girls' Index?, our groundbreaking study of 17,500 girls, highlighting the urgent need for action. Speaking at the UNGA Goals House was a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together. The event, "The Mental Health Crisis Affecting Girls," brought together thought leaders, policymakers, and changemakers from around the world, all united in our commitment to supporting the next generation. This UNGA experience reinforced my belief that by investing in girls' mental health and well-being, we're investing in a brighter future for all. The conversations we had and the partnerships we forged are just the beginning. I'd also like to express my appreciation to Dr. Laura Erickson-Schroth Srickson-Schroth, the Chief Medical Director at the The Jed Foundation (JED), for her valuable insights, and to our excellent moderator, Wawa Gatheru, for guiding our discussion with skill and empathy.
