“Simple” never means “ordinary” in the way we look at handmade rugs. It’s a simple but powerful idea, and it inspires both the way we create rugs and guides how curate classics. Our?“Rez Kilim” construction is our most exciting new offering that Kilim style has inspired. The technique draws on the panel-weaving technique, but employs a heavy, loop-like texture and the most refreshing modern colors. If our best modern work comes when one masters classics, as our Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal says, then “Rez Kilim” may exemplify that principle. Featured today is our Studio South project featuring an exceptional Rez Kilim. Few textiles command the presence of a true Savonnerie carpet—each one representing the pinnacle of European luxury and royal patronage. What fascinates us about these extraordinary French masterpieces is their paradoxical origin story. These icons of aristocratic splendor began in a repurposed soap factory (hence "Savonnerie") when Henry IV established the royal manufactory in 1627, determined to challenge the Ottoman monopoly on luxury carpets. When one encounters an authentic Savonnerie, we're witnessing the apex of French artistic ambition—Louis XIV's determination to make France the epicenter of European luxury. As International Women's Day approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on one of history's most overlooked forms of feminine resistance and cultural preservation. The?Afghan war rugs?present the most profound example of textile resistance in modern history. In these extraordinary works, women transformed traditional motifs into visual chronicles of conflict—weaving tanks, helicopters, and weapons alongside ancestral patterns. Afghanistan's women weaving circles created communal spaces where oral histories flourished through songs and stories shared during creation. These gathering rituals formed rare sanctuaries for female expression under oppressive regimes. In honoring these textile traditions, we recognize that women's creative resistance deserves to stand alongside more documented forms of political action. Their creative expression proclaimed: "We are still here." Comment below to share your thoughts about which women artisans have inspired you with their creative resilience. Featured today is an outstanding antique Persian?Farahan?rug—a one-of-a-kind masterpiece new to the collection. Farahan carpets, developed in 19th-century West Central Persia for regional aristocrats, uniquely combined geometric tribal patterns with refined curvilinear designs, gaining Western recognition at the 1873 Vienna Exhibition This is an exemplary traditional piece, with more of a vibrance than many found in the modern day. Designers and admirers of the craft alike will particularly appreciate its size—one of the best and most versatile one can find in Persian rugs of its period that lends to so many spaces today. Why are Dragon Rugs so versatile? Well, it is a creature that migrates across cultures yet transforms with each crossing. When one understands the dragon rug's dual nature as both political symbols and imperial & spiritual allegiance, one can never view Asian textiles the same way again. When a 17th century Ningxia weaver embedded five-clawed imperial dragons amid cloud bands, they weren't merely decorating—they were codifying power structures. Only the emperor could commission the five-clawed variant; any unauthorized use meant death. The most extraordinary examples display dragons in dynamic motion—their bodies twist through negative space as much as through color. Dragon rugs navigate between East and West much like their subject moves between water and sky—fluid, transformative, defying categorization. Have you encountered these imperial dragons in any museum collections?? Featured today is an incredibly rare and exciting new curation from Rug & Kilim—an early 19th century embroidery panel with a bold pictorial design. Originating from China circa 1810-1820, this exemplar features a dramatic series of figural depictions of a traditional Chinese Opera, or "Xiqu," referencing the historical use of these masks in theater. Common in Qing period decorative panels, this type of depiction often celebrated heroic figures. Such tapestries were displayed in ceremonial contexts or as palace decorations, emphasizing both aesthetic refinement and East Asian cultural traditions. It’s a striking and rare collectible piece of design history as much as a handmade work of art—a one-of-a-kind masterpiece to be treasured by designers and connoisseurs alike. Art resonates across mediums, cultures and time. When one recognizes these connections, one never see either art form in isolation again. Drawing parallels with Van Gogh's masterpiece titled "Starry Night", we present our contemporary abstract rug in a lush pile. Admirers of the craft may note moods of abstract expressionism and minimalism together, where a more expressive pattern with a playful sense of movement is underscored by an almost humble palette. What's also fascinating is how this rug has reinterpreted rather than simply reproduced the painting. Oushak rugs commanded the attention of both Ottoman courts and European nobility. From our collection, this 17th century Oushak is an extremely collectible exemplar of its kind, both in its outstanding large size and in the unique play of intricate traditional patterns it enjoys. Admirers of the craft will particularly appreciate the fine detail of the dense, elaborate floral patterns within each medallion and border—a truly masterful level of intricacy among the many that speak to this piece’s sense of grandeur and aristocratic presence. It’s a rare find from its period, both archaic and stately in its charm, yet teeming with the more whimsical sensibility that distinguishes these rugs among other Oriental and Turkish rugs of its caliber in so many ways. Has a rug ever reminded you of a tradition? Rugs don't merely decorate spaces; they evoke cultural memory. For Afghan tribal women, kilim-making was often accompanied by work songs—compositions shared during collective weaving gatherings. The weaving gatherings themselves form sacred female spaces where cultural knowledge transfers through hands, eyes, and shared creation rather than texts. These weaving songs, passed orally through generations, create cultural memories forbidden in written form. Each color shift and intentional pattern break marks not imperfection but deliberate expression—a weaver's signature within collective tradition.
