  • Tomorrow is the anniversary of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye's passing into parinirvana. Jamgon Kongtrul (1813–1899), along with Jamyang Kyentse Wangpo and Dechen Chogyur Lingpa, all depicted in this work, are the great founding figures of the 19th-century non-sectarian movement in Tibetan Buddhism. Kongtrul studied with the most prominent teachers of his time from various traditions and is most known for compiling this knowledge and experience into the "Five Treasuries." This work contains some of the finest recordings of the teachings of all the major Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Today he continues to have a vast impact on Tibetan Buddhist teachers and followers around the world. This work depicts Jamgon Kongtrul surrounded by the deities and masters who are instrumental to the development of his spiritual realization and non-sectarian movement. These deities include the primordial Buddha Vajradhara, blue in color with one face and two hands crossed at the heart in the top left, and the Five Deity Jinasagara Avalokiteshvara, who is red in color and found to the right of Jamgon Kongtrul. At the bottom left is the Shadbhuja Mahakala (Six-Armed Mahakala). ______ Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thayl (1813–1899); Tibet; late 19th century; pigments on cloth; Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art; C2003.25.2 (HAR 65265) #tibetanbuddhism #himalayanart #parinirvana #RubinMuseum

  • The Nepal Civil War, which raged from 1996 to 2006, led to the deaths of over 17,000 people. The war also called artists, poets, and writers to become activists, articulating the pain and trauma of these times. In our latest Spiral article, Sangeeta Thapa wrote about the artists who created socially-aware works that reflected and explored sociopolitical issues such as climate grief, the crisis of the subaltern, the suppression of the disenfranchised, historical grievances of indigenous people, the status of women, gender and LGBTQIA+ rights, the city as a locus for creativity, and the plight of Nepali migrant workers. Take a deep dive into the Met’s exhibition "Mandalas: Mapping the Buddhist Art of Tibet" and learn about Tibetan Buddhist siddhas, mahasiddhas, and mandalas from one of the world's leading scholars.
