The next time you break a rubber specimen in the common tensile stress-strain test, hold the fracture surface up to the light and see if there is a shiny ring-like region. For more details, check out a paper Lewis Tunnicliffe, William Mars, and I published last year in Rubber Chemistry and Technology: https://lnkd.in/gHFkbKAv (open access) Interesting side note: I suggested to Lewis that it would be good to capture a few images of the fracture surfaces for the purpose of proving that low-strength fractures of some specimens were due to glass beads introduced into the rubber as model defects. A short while later he showed me microscopy images that he captured for all 200 broken specimens (!!!), which led us to discover the fracture rings.
