Accuracy reports (comparing LiDAR points to ground control collected with terrestrial survey) are critical to client confidence. I recently created this form in #excel that automates the process. Based on the Rock Robotics report (which is only provided when a survey deliverable is ordered). GSD has been added recently as well. The field survey and corresponding LiDAR elevation data is pasted in and Excel does the rest. RTR thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with our sister company, AED Energy Services, on an exciting project in Michigan! ?? Mike Kunkel, Jordan Mullen, and Harold Miller brought their drone and survey expertise to the table by collecting bathymetry and setting ground control before flying their LiDAR drone along a 1.5-mile railway corridor that crosses the Huron River. From LiDAR data to bathymetric insights, this mission will help pave the way for the construction of a new pipeline. Collecting accurate bathymetric and LiDAR data is essential for pipeline construction to ensure proper planning and design. This data helps identify potential obstacles, assess environmental impacts, and ensure the structural integrity of the pipeline, especially when crossing rivers and other challenging terrains. By using advanced technology, we’re able to reduce risks and streamline the entire construction process. ?? RTR recently partnered with one of our sister companies, CATSI, Inc., to complete a comprehensive thermal inspection at an asphalt plant CPI terminal. While RTR focused on drone-based thermal scanning of the process heater exterior to detect hot spots lead by Harold Miller, CATSI's Ed Haynicz conducted ground-level and interior measurements using a handheld Flir camera. Hot spots indicate areas where material has thinned, leading to inefficient energy use and increased safety risks due to faster heat penetration. With real-time client access to our inspection via a remote viewing station (built by Mike Kunkel), our teams provided detailed insights crucial for enhancing both safety and energy efficiency within the facility. Thermal scanning in the asphalt industry is vital not only for preventing costly energy loss but also for mitigating potential hazards that could compromise plant safety. Today we’re spotlighting a recent project for a Power Supplier in Ohio, where we were tasked with inventorying all assets within several substations. In collaboration with ICF, who conducted rating calculations for the client’s equipment, RTR was contracted to perform the essential fieldwork. Our team, led by Jordan Mullen, utilized 3D laser scanning to capture detailed substation data while constructability experts Alan Gothard and Allan Everett used our custom field data collection app to meticulously record information about each asset. From buses and leads to circuit breakers and transformers, every detail was captured and organized. ?? Benefits of 3D Laser Scanning: Safety: With a collection radius greater than 200 feet, our team stays grounded, eliminating the need to climb and pull measurements of elevated equipment, thereby avoiding hazards associated with ladders, uneven ground, and conductive equipment. Efficiency: The scanner’s capabilities allow for comprehensive data collection without the need to shut down equipment. Detailed Analysis: Engineers can perform detailed virtual walkthroughs from their offices, enhancing analysis and decision-making processes. Equipment Identification: In the event equipment has no labels/markings, laser scan data can be pulled and sent to a third party to assist in identifying the manufacturer/model. Project Manager Ryan Brazzo compiled this data into comprehensive spreadsheets and detailed CAD drawings, ensuring a thorough and efficient process.
