We’ve been awarded a three-year grant to support the launch of a program aimed at enhancing mental health and preventing suicide among veterans who recently left the military — a group more likely to face higher risks of suicide and certain mental health disorders. “While there are several programs to help veterans who have recently left the military find jobs and housing, there aren't widely available evidence-based programs to prevent mental health problems and suicide during this transition period,” said Shannon Blakey, PhD, a research clinical psychologist at RTI who will lead the project. Over the last 50 years, Bangladesh has seen significant improvements across key health metrics, including maternal and child mortality, fertility rate, and nutritional status. At the same time, maternal mortality has stagnated, child stunting continues to be a challenge, needs for family planning remain unmet, and Bangladesh is one of eight countries that account for more than two-thirds of the global tuberculosis burden. American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) communities are disproportionally affected by suicide, with rates increasing since 2003. To identify individuals at risk for suicide or displaying suicidal behaviors, Tribal nations are exploring Tribal-specific suicide surveillance systems.
