What if architects could predict how people will move through a space before it’s even built? RSP’s Derek McCallum, AIA, CID, NCARB and University of Minnesota master’s student Mariangel Meza are exploring just that, using crowd behavior simulations to challenge traditional design assumptions. By modeling movement patterns with the help of Oasys MassMotion software, their research revealed surprising insights into wayfinding, space utilization, and circulation. As part of our commitment to research-driven design, we’re working with UMN to integrate emerging tools into the architectural process, bridging the gap between academia and practice. As part of a Design-Build team with GLHN Architects & Engineers, Inc and CORE , RSP helped create a more inviting campus gateway with an impactful new stair, refreshed interior and exterior upgrades of Marroney Theatre, and two new shade structures—among other improvements. We’re marking another #NewWorkWednesday with the transformation of a dying mall into a thriving healthcare and community hub. RSP partnered with Columbus Regional Health - Columbus, Indiana, the City of Columbus, BSA LifeStructures, Smith Seckman Reid, Inc., and Turner Construction Company to turn the former Fair Oaks Mall into a vibrant destination. The 150,000-SF facility now consolidates 15 clinics, expanding access to essential care while revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood. Public art has the power to transform not just spaces, but entire communities. When the residents of the George Ditch neighborhood in Tempe received a beautification grant, they turned to local artists—including RSP’s Liz Taylor, NCIDQ, AIGA, SEGD—to bring their vision to life. Working closely with the community, Liz created a mural that balances optimism with resilience, reflecting the neighborhood’s strength and spirit. From three birds symbolizing a family’s journey to lemon blossoms reminding us that even sweet things have a little sour, every detail tells a story.
