Last month, California increased its standards for CCC programs across the state through the Cross Connection Control Policy Handbook (or CCCPH). The handbook requires a number of great (but daunting) items, including a thorough written CCC plan. We have created a free and easy-to-use workbook to help CA water systems get started on this written plan. It includes our tips and recommendations to create an effective and achievable plan. ? Sometimes a little movie magic can wreak havoc on the water supply... ?? In 1994, a movie was being filmed at a ranch in Los Angeles. In this particular scene, it was supposed to be snowing. ?? The film crew was spraying artificial snow from a pressurized 55-gallon tank. There was a malfunction with the intended water supply for the tank, so a special effects person connected it to a garden hose on the ranch. ?? When they opened the hose bibb, the pressure in the tank forced approximately 30 gallons of the chemical through the ranch's potable water system into the public water supply. ?? Nearby residents soon complained of brown soapy water coming from their taps. The water system had to be thoroughly flushed for several hours, forcing residents to rely on bottled water. Luckily, nobody was harmed. Future incidents were prevented by installing a RPZ on the ranch's water service connection. This story illustrates why it's important to have backflow prevention in place to protect against actual or potential cross connections. This #DrinkingWaterWeek, we also celebrate 50 years of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The act was passed in 1974 and empowered the EPA to establish regulations to protect public water systems. This laid the groundwork for cross-connection control and backflow prevention standards. The SDWA has been amended several times to hold water systems to higher standards and ensure the best quality water reaches us where we need it. While the SDWA mandates quality standards for utilities, everyone plays a part in protecting our water.
