A farmer in Honduras travels four hours by bus, delivers a one-pound bag of coffee, and this note is attached “Thank you for making us feel safe in your hands. God Bless you.” The recipient of the gesture is Dr. Christopher Evanich, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in total joint replacements. I met up with Dr. Evanich at the Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – Franklin Campus to discuss his tremendous work with the One World Surgery Team. The orphanage and senior care center is called Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos which is Spanish for “our little brothers and sisters”. This is where Dr. Evanich, his brother Dr. J. David Evanich, and his team perform miracles on a routine basis. One World has a system where they interview patients to identify those who are most vulnerable and most in need of the services. Each surgeon completes on average 4 surgeries per day, for 5 days, for a total of 40 surgeries for the week. The x-rays were heartbreaking. Patients had been living with broken hips, walking on them for years, or suffered from arthritis so severe it would shift their bodies as they were walking. Their bravery and perseverance despite such difficulties are inspiring. The volunteer work that Dr. Evanich and his team complete is a great example of overcoming obstacles that we do not face in the U.S. The severity of the impairments, lack of regular electricity, and extreme tropical heat is a constant reminder of how fortunate we are here in the states. The Eagles "Hotel California" was released in 1977, which was a few months prior to the opening of a new radiology sales and service company in the Great Lakes Region called RPS Imaging. Watching The Eagles open their residency in Las Vegas recently at The Sphere was an absolutely iconic experience. A completely sold-out crowd of 18,600 were blown away by the technology advancements, and I couldn’t help but think about how many different medical advancements have taken place in the same time period. The Radiology advancements alone from analog (film), to CR, to DR, to integrated DR Systems is equally remarkable and inspiring. Don Henley spoke about their ongoing goal of staying true to keeping the quality of their music at the highest level possible, which reminded me about our goal of always striving to improve workflow resulting in better patient outcomes. Granted, we do not have 167,000 speakers and 580,000 square feet of LED lighting, but we partner with great companies that produce unbelievable images that assist in advancing the quality of patient healthcare. When we post an article on LinkedIn, it is typical that we know weeks in advance of the message to be conveyed. However, sometimes a current event occurs that is of such a magnitude that you know a change is necessary. Hurricane Helene is one of those catastrophic events that takes priority over everything else. Bill Lee is the CEO of Blue Ridge Imaging Technologies that is located in the devastated area of Asheville, NC. Bill is a personal friend of mine, having met when we were both members of the National Healthcare Distributors (NHD) over 25 years ago. Over the years we have become very good friends and stayed in touch by going to dinners, special events, and even church in Buncombe County. To see the pictures and videos coming from this area is devastating. It's times like these that we choose to focus on the positive side, seeing the best from individuals that work closely together to make a positive difference in a very negative situation. In speaking with Bill, he and his team are working closely with local Healthcare facilities to ensure that their efforts to provide timely medical assistance goes as smoothly as possible. Recently I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Alice Pichan, Director of Radiology at St. Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor, MI. Alice told me about an exciting Radiology FIND Program (Following INcidental Disease) that their health system had developed. This in turn led me to Amanda Pepple, Director TH Enterprise FIND Program who outlined their unique and ambitious program. The FIND Program is a centrally managed program utilizing software and Nurse Navigation staff to identify and track incidental findings and aneurysms of a worrisome nature found on radiology imaging. Findings on radiology imaging that are unrelated to the reason for the exam are called incidental findings. Originating several years ago in Trinity Health Ann Arbor, the program was approved for expansion across the Trinity Health Enterprise and is set to complete its expansion efforts in early 2026. The benefits of the FIND program include; support for early diagnosis of cancer and other diseases/illnesses, informing patients of recommended follow up, facilitating earlier diagnostic and treatment interventions including biopsy, surgery, radiation, & chemotherapy, and earlier treatments extend patient lives and lower health care costs. This year they have an extra-large goal as they are on the?Road to a Million.??Their 2024 fundraising goal will put them over our goal to hit one million dollars raised for the Dempsey Center. The Dempsey Center makes life better for people managing the impact of cancer by easing the side effects of cancer through complementary therapies, counseling and other support services for individuals and families. The Dempsey Challenge is an annual run/walk/ride experience to benefit the Dempsey Center.
