As part of Women in Construction week, I wanted to take a moment to get on my soapbox… I’m not going to talk about being a woman in construction, but more about the next generation of construction. Somehow working with your hands has gone from a well-respected profession to one that entire generations are being dissuaded from considering. These kids who loved building stuff and taking things apart are being directed toward college for 4-year degrees, when a trade school probably would have likely fit their needs better. A couple of years ago a road by our house was being widened and to the delight of my young children we saw all kinds of heavy equipment. My youngest immediately took to the cranes and started saying that was what he wanted to do when he grew up. You know my reply… “That’s sounds like fun! I bet you’d get to do a lot of cool things with that job.” He’s since changed his mind to being a dad, a teacher, a painter, a mad scientist, king, and a professional Lego builder. So far I’ve tried to gently redirect only one of those, but there is always a chance he could meet Princess Charlotte! #rpmpartners #womeninconstruction #tradeschools #generalcontractor #cranesarecool
