The Rockingham Planning Commission and New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway Alliance (NHSGA) developed plans to transform an abandoned railroad corridor into a 17-mile multi-use trail, which became part of the 3,000-mile path stretching from Calais, ME, to Key West, FL. GPI was chosen to survey and design the 9.6-mile stretch of trail spanning from North Hampton, NH, to Portsmouth, NH, using advanced technologies like LiDAR, UAS imagery, and field reviews to create a comprehensive map and accelerate the design process. The project faced unique challenges, including jurisdictional wetlands, sediment buildup, and encroachment on the corridor, which were mitigated through careful design, including trail shifts and specialized drainage solutions to alleviate flooding. The corridor, eligible for National Register listing, retained its historic character during design consultations with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT), Federal Highway Administration, and New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources (NHDHR). Safety improvements were made at busy crossings, and excavated material was reused on-site. The completed New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway trail now connects four municipalities and promotes outdoor activity along a scenic greenway.
