Though he needs no introduction, Dr. Reid Meloy is a board-certified forensic psychologist (ABPP) and former clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, and a faculty member of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center. He is a fellow and of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and is past president of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology. Dr. Meloy has authored or co-authored over two hundred fifty papers and has authored, co-authored or edited thirteen books. He has been consulting, researching and writing about personality disorder, psychopathy, stalking, narcissism, criminality, mental disorder, and targeted violence for the past thirty years. Dr. Meloy has been a consultant on criminal, counterintelligence, and counterterrorism cases for the Behavioral Analysis Unit, FBI, Quantico, for the past twenty-one years. He is the originator and developer of the TRAP-18 (Terrorist Radicalization Assessment Protocol) and was also a founding associate editor of the Journal of Threat Assessment and Management. Julia Kupper is a Tactical Linguist based in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to addressing a pivotal global challenge of our time: terrorism and targeted violence. Being a trained expert in “Forensic Linguistics”, she has a unique skillset that allows her to combine traditional violence prevention with linguistics—the science of language—and devise proactive measures to enhance national security and public safety efforts. Over the last few years, she has developed, researched and implemented the concept of “Tactical Linguistics”, a pre-incident approach that illustrates how a linguist can assist multi-disciplinary threat assessment teams in identifying, analyzing and mitigating threats of premeditated violence. As an independent researcher, Julia studies targeted violence, suicide and stalking communications to enhance the prevention of different types of violent threats, and to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world impact. Her work has been featured in scientific journals and peer-reviewed magazines, such as Cambridge University Press, Perspectives on Terrorism, the Journal of Threat Assessment and Management, the FBI’s online magazine Law Enforcement Bulletin, the Global Network on Extremism and Technology, ASIS’ magazine Security Management, and IEEE Xplore.
