The partnership between the National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions to put Nat Geo Explorers on NG-LEX ships as Visiting Scientists to both execute science in spectacular and remote (and spectacularly remote) places and interact with the curious and enthusiastic guests is one for which I am particularly grateful. I get to weave so much of what I love together - the sea, winter, conservation science, citizen/community science, presentations and of course penguins, albatross, walruses and heaps of beautiful ice all with an eye toward action to protect it all! Thank you everyone who has donated to the #LEXNGFund, it makes a difference! If you want to see results from the first two NG-LEX expeditions Brooke Winslow and I were on check out: https://lnkd.in/eutri34R and https://lnkd.in/e8nZtxhV #CSIfortheOcean Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean
CSI for the Ocean is a global microplastic and microfiber mapping and monitoring program that utilizes affordable and accessible methods from forensic science for community engagement while revealing and promoting solutions to address plastic pollution. Supported by the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund, the project is documenting the type, distribution, concentration and potential sources of microplastics and manmade microfiber in the surface water and air along the expedition tracks of NG-LEX voyages in the Arctic and Southern Ocean. Onboard guests participate alongside #NatGeoExplorer Rachael Z. Miller to collect and process samples to turn data into knowledge, and knowledge into action and impact - all for a clean ocean.??

This concurrent experience for a Prospect Schools staff member and recent graduate started as a “wild idea” that I tossed to Ashley Sullivan after my own experience sailing with the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean. I am so grateful to her for saying yes and investing in this vision! And, I am also so profoundly appreciative of my experience as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow via National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions, which was the experience that introduced me to Rozalia Project and Rachael Z. Miller. Let this be a testament to the power of educational programs and fellowships and their amplified reach through schools!
Environmental Societies and Systems is one of our standard-level International Baccalaureate (IB) classes at Brooklyn Prospect High School and one that changes how our students perceive our world. The course inspired young alum Marcus Sherriff (BPHS '2024) to apply for participation on a live-aboard research trip this past summer. One of our educators, Brannon Burke O'Connor, who teaches ESS, also went on the journey. Read about their experience through Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean below! https://lnkd.in/eHR4uXhU
