Last month, Drs. Paromita Nath (Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering)and Thivanka Ariyarathna, Ph.D. (School of Earth and Environment) brought their expertise to McGraw Elementary, Camden, leading an engaging session on potential heavy metal exposure in Camden and how machine learning enables more efficient approaches to tackling environmental challenges. The session included a hands-on activity with a 3D watershed model, where students simulated pollution, examined factors affecting heavy metal transport, and explored the water cycle, pollution sources, and ways to protect local watersheds. Additionally, basic machine learning concepts were introduced, demonstrating how these techniques can help tackle environmental challenges. The event had 150+ attendees, including students across grades K-8, parents, teachers, and youth educators. This interactive session sparked curiosity and encouraged participants connect science, engineering, technology, and environmental stewardship, making complex concepts relatable and creating value through a richer understanding of environmental issues. This collaborative project between Rowan University (Paromita Nath, Thivanka Ariyarathna, Ph.D., Mahbubur M.), Rutgers University - Camden (Iman Dehzangi), and Social Responsibility Through Me (Shaneka Boucher) is funded by South Jersey Institute for Population Health.

I am excited to present my technical presentation at the Acoustic Metamaterials track during ASME's IMECE 2024 in Portland, OR, from November 17-21. This is an incredible opportunity to contribute to one of the largest mechanical engineering conferences in the world. I am deeply grateful to my advisor, Dr. Chen Shen , and Rowan University Mechanical Engineering for their continuous support and guidance in making this achievement possible.

?? Meet LeeAnn! ?? LeeAnn Cleckner is a transfer student from Mercer County, where she earned an associate’s degree in engineering and a certificate in advanced manufacturing technology. Currently a senior at Rowan University, LeeAnn is pursuing her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a Minor in Rowan University Mathematics. Her passion for engineering began with shows like How It’s Made and Mythbusters, which inspired her to understand how things work and to challenge the world around her. As a technician’s assistant at Rowan, LeeAnn has gained valuable hands-on experience in design and manufacturing, working on projects across the electrical and mechanical engineering departments. Outside of her rigorous class schedule, LeeAnn enjoys meeting with the Rowan E-Sports club, drawing, and listening to music.
