This March marks the 60th anniversary of the historic Selma to Montgomery marches, which gave rise to passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a seminal piece of legislation that fulfilled the promise of the 15th Amendment’s right to vote for each citizen. Join Barbara Combs, Professor of Sociology at Kennesaw State University, for a two-session course taking an in-depth look at the Selma to Montgomery Marches, a watershed moment in the history of American civil rights. Ella Baker, known as the Godmother of the Civil Rights Movement, said "freedom is a constant struggle." Nowhere is this more evident than in the struggle for full voting rights. By the time the Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed, the 15th Amendment — which should have guaranteed Black Americans voting rights — was nearly 100 years old. In this course, Dr. Combs will tell the story of the marches, exploring their historical and cultural context, and their short-term and long-term impacts. You will gain both a historical understanding of this significant moment, as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of civic engagement and individual contributions in shaping a more equitable society. Barbara Harris Combs, J.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology and Chair at Kennesaw State University. Dr. Combs is the author of the books From Selma to Montgomery: The Long March to Freedom and Bodies Out of Place: Theorizing Anti Blackness in U.S. Society. A widely-published interdisciplinary scholar, Dr. Combs has published works in American Behavioral Scientist, the New York Times, The Conversation, and other premier periodicals. Join her for this fascinating course, whose themes of justice, equality, and civic engagement are as timely today as ever.?Learn more: https://bit.ly/41gA7kc #CivilRightsMovement #VotingRights #SelmaToMontgomery #HistoryMatters #CivicEngagement #SocialJustice #EducationForChange #AmericanHistory #EquityAndJustice

Since his death in 2008, David Foster Wallace’s lucid appraisal of American culture has become even more prescient. Join author and educator Mike Miley for an introduction to Wallace’s writing through his essays on entertainment in American life, which were written on assignment for magazines like Harper's Magazine, Esquire magazine, Rolling Stone, or Gourmet. Traversing the decks of cruise ships, the pages of postmodern literature, and many places in between, these essays offer a comprehensive tour of Wallace’s core thematic concerns while also dissecting contemporary American culture in all its abundant, contradictory glory. Over four conversational sessions, Miley will provide background for each essay, discuss their main arguments, highlight Wallace’s deft writing style, and connect each essay to Wallace’s greater literary project — with plenty of time for discussion and student questions as well. Mike Miley teaches about American literature and film studies, and he is the recipient of the Harry Ransom Center Fellowship from the The University of Texas at Austin and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Miley has been published widely, from The Atlantic to Bright Lights Film Journal. His essay “Wallace Reading Wallace” was named a Notable Literary Essay in Best American Essays. Join him for this detailed introduction to Wallace, one of the most exciting magazine writers since the days of Didion, Thompson, and Wolfe — a voice often imitated, but seldom matched.
