Rotaplast Executive Director Daniel DeSanto is now an official Rotarian and member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco (#2)! Established in 1908, this Club was pivotal in the reconstruction of San Francisco following the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire. Known as the second oldest Rotary Club globally, the Rotary Club of San Francisco, affectionately referred to as "Club #2," has maintained a significant impact within Rotary International, in San Francisco, and worldwide. In the heart of Kampala, Uganda, our mission unfolded over two weeks with incredible dedication. With three operating rooms buzzing with #PeopleOfAction - including Rotaplast volunteers, Rotarians, Rotaract members, medical residents, community partners, and more - we witnessed extraordinary transformations. These heartwarming photos, by Mission Historian Simon Rios, capture the profound impact of our efforts, restoring hope and changing lives one surgery at a time. Located in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, Kiruddu National Referral Hospital is the focal point of our 2024 Rotaplast surgical trip. It is a public tertiary hospital under the management of the Ministry of Health, serving as a major referral center for patients across the country and also functioning as a teaching facility for Makerere University’s College of Health Sciences. Today, we celebrate Dr. Leigh Pederson's incredible contributions to Rotaplast! Dr. Pederson has participated in five Rotaplast surgical trips as an anesthesiologist and has traveled to Kampala, Uganda; Tacna, Peru; Chengde, China; and Bago City, Philippines. On day five in Kampala, Uganda, Rotaplast volunteers took a moment to explore the vibrant Uganda Craft Market, immersing themselves in the local culture and entrepreneurial spirit. They also had the privilege of meeting students at the Heart of Dance studio in Nsambya, witnessing firsthand the talent and passion within the community. These experiences remind us of the beauty and resilience of the people we serve. As we continue our surgical clinic, we celebrate the rich cultural backdrop of Kampala, finding joy and inspiration in every corner.
