FMC finalizes rule on ‘unreasonable’ ocean carrier cargo space refusals -The agency shared its guidance on what it sees as a violation of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act when it comes to vessel space accommodation. The Federal Maritime Commission published a final ruling last week on its framework to determine when carriers are refusing cargo space accommodation. The rule is part of requirements created by the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022, according to a July 22 press release. Before OSRA was signed into law, several shippers submitted complaints to the FMC about carriers denying them vessel space. During the pandemic, agriculture exporters had containers left behind, as carriers favored shipping empty containers to Asia amid high demand for foreign goods. https://lnkd.in/g5jeC6Ue

US manufacturing gauge drops to eight-month low WASHINGTON, Aug 1(Reuters) - A measure of U.S. manufacturing activity dropped to an eight-month low in July amid a slump in new orders, but that likely exaggerates the industry's struggles as production at factories rebounded sharply in the second quarter. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said on Thursday that its manufacturing PMI dropped to 46.8 last month, the lowest reading since November, from 48.5 in June. A PMI reading below 50 indicates contraction in the manufacturing sector, which accounts for 10.3% of the economy. https://lnkd.in/gza9jA4H
