Honoring the Life and Legacy of Paul S. Devrouax Jr. - As we close out Black History Month, it’s fitting to pay tribute and honor the extraordinary contributions of the late, great Paul S. Devrouax Jr. (1942–2010)—a pioneering and visionary architect whose work helped transform Washington, D.C. Born in New Orleans, Paul broke racial barriers in the field of architecture & played a pivotal role in shaping the urban landscape of our nation’s capital. His journey was marked by determination, talent, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—qualities that paved the way for future generations of Black architects. Through his firm, Devrouax + Purnell, Paul was responsible for some of D.C.’s most transformative projects and iconic landmarks: Capital One Arena ????, Nationals Park ????, Washington Convention Center, & African-American Civil War Memorial. He also made history as the 1st African-American architect to design the headquarters of a Fortune 500 company with the Freddie Mac building ??. Perhaps most notably, he played a key role in designing the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial ??, an enduring symbol of justice and equality. I was deeply honored to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for that project—a moment that still resonates with me today. Beyond his architectural achievements, Paul was a friend, mentor, & role model to many, and to me, somewhat of an adopted uncle or godfather. He carried himself with wisdom and grace, always lifting others as he climbed. His guidance extended far beyond the drafting table—he inspired countless individuals with his dedication, kindness, and belief in the potential of those around him. His legacy isn’t just reflected in the physical structures he designed but in the many lives he touched. Black history is American history & Paul’s contributions deserve to be recognized and celebrated not just in February, but always-His work stands as a powerful reminder that vision, perseverance, and inclusivity can shape the world for the better. CRP Affordable Housing and Community Development, in collaboration with Bold Communities, Fontaine Development, and Rose Capital Advisors have successfully secured construction financing for Phase 2 of the Pardes Apartments in Elk Grove, CA. This phase will deliver 140 affordable units for individuals and families earning 30-70% of the Area Median Income, furthering our commitment to providing high-quality housing in a Highest Resource Area with access to top schools, retail, and recreation. ? We extend our gratitude to the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency for awarding Project-Based Vouchers to support individuals and families at risk of homelessness, enhancing the project's affordability and accessibility. ? Special thanks to Housing Trust Silicon Valley and Century Housing for critical predevelopment financing, and to CDLAC and CTCAC for tax-exempt bonds and 4% tax credits. Additionally, we appreciate the contributions of CREA, LLC for providing Federal and State LIHTC equity and Citi Community Capital for construction and permanent financing. We also appreciate California Housing Finance Agency’s support in issuing the tax-exempt bonds. ?
