In the early 2000s, rebuilding Rwanda’s coffee sector wasn’t just about replanting trees. It was about nurturing local expertise, empowering young people, and setting a foundation for long-term success. Today, Rwanda’s coffee industry is a source of national pride, with award-winning beans and globally recognized leaders who got their start during those early years of recovery. Did you know that Root Capital launched two new Women’s Councils: Mexico & Central America and South America? These two Councils were modeled after the African Women’s Council that launched in 2023. The Councils provide a platform for women leaders to explore key issues, such as climate change, access to finance, and gender barriers for women farmers and employees. This creates the space for women entrepreneurs to share experiences from a gender-inclusive perspective, co-create innovative solutions to shared challenges, and build strategic plans for women’s empowerment. In 1999, Root Capital issued our first loan to Asobagri–a Guatemalan coffee cooperative that has grown to 1,900 farmers. Today, Asobagri has a Gender Commission in place, along with a 33% female board, and ‘Café Due?as,’ a women-owned specialty coffee brand. With our continued support, Asobagri is not only preserving coffee culture but creating real economic opportunities.
