Last week’s Smart Data for Energy Summit by Roosevelt Strategic Council brought together leaders across the healthcare, higher education, federal facilities, industry, academia and respective sector associations. (Honored to have representatives from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), U.S. Green Building Council, and BIG-NYC Building Intelligence Group as part of the discussion!) It was a collaborative and open dialogue where participants got to learn from each other, develop new strategies and professional collaborations, and gain knowledge from industry innovators on leveraging the evolving data driven landscape in the large built environment to help drive energy optimization. A special acknowledgement and thank you to our panel moderators who led their conversations down a frank and engaging path with attendees. 1. Lisa Stanley from U.S. Green Building Council who led the higher education panel through several challenging topics facing university facility leaders 2. Gerald A. (Andy) Woommavovah, SASHE, CHFM from Trinity Health who led the healthcare panel on leadership, technical considerations, and overarching goals of sustainability throughout 3. Carlo V. from Texas A&M University who tackled a panel mixed with higher education and healthcare, and brought a bit of welcomed humor along! 4. Trevor Morrison from The Building People who led an engaging conversation with Master Systems Integrators and the audience 5. Mahmoud Shouman, P.Eng., SmartScore AP from Jaros, Baum & Bolles who created and facilitated a diverse panel of sector experts to discuss the future of smarter, intelligent buildings. 6. Claire Reynolds from Converge Strategies, LLC who led our federal facilities panelists in an insightful and educational discussion. Summary of just a few discussion points: ?? Why do we expect our building and energy data to be 100% from the get go? We need to get comfortable with executing at 70-80% and build on that. ??Given our shortage of workforce in facilities, do we need to move more towards “operator proofing our systems?”. In that same vein, if technology is not the problem, but how we use it ( as was argued at the summit ) then who should be the trainers, and how will they be funded, when it comes to operating the data driven systems in a built environment? ??Deferred maintenance is not the right phrase to get the dollars we need…rather, we should be referring to it as capital renewal. Further, if facility leaders can find ways to reduce their energy and operating costs, how can they devise a way to “keep” that savings to support the financing of additional projects? ??BMS systems do not always do what the operator needs…or does too much thus creating too much noise for them to work through. ??We are only scratching the surface of using AI in building management...

Head (VP) of Healthcare Vertical Market - Siemens Smart Infrastructure

I echo the sentiments of my colleague Kunal Chitre on the exceptional "Smart Data Energy Summit" hosted by Monica Mckenzie of Roosevelt Strategic Council this week. The discussions on leveraging #AI, bridging the labor skill gap with technology, resiliency, and cybersecurity were nothing short of engaging and thought provoking. Insights shared by industry experts from Healthcare, Education, and Federal sectors will pave the way for a smarter, predictive, and more self-adaptive built environment. Proud to have sponsored this event alongside Fred James, Jerry Folsom, Margo Thomas and Michele Mitch-Peterson. #Smartbuildings #SmartData #AI #ITOT #SmartInfrastructure #SmartHospital

Finding the Synergy Between Owner / Operator Needs and Industry’s Innovative Digital Capabilities to Support Energy Optimization in the Large Built Environment. (RSC Group Members: as a reminder, if you are a nonprofit healthcare system, higher education (k-12 welcome), federal or state facilities personnel, you can attend for FREE but you need to register in advance!) Data-driven capabilities continue to expand at a quickening pace and ensuring that capability aligns with operational goals is critical. As large energy consumers in the built environment continue their work towards improving their energy efficiencies, resiliency, and meeting respective environmental goals for their campuses and facilities, how can they best leverage data - driven capabilities to support their efforts? It takes a constructive dialogue among owners, operators and industry coming together to find the appropriate strategies and technical pathways. It takes a willingness of owners and operators to share in their real challenges and intended goals, and industry who is dedicated to educating them on how they can efficiently and effectively utilize their data and digital tools throughout the planning, build, management, and daily O&M phases. On September 18 – 19 2024, Roosevelt Strategic Council will convene the 2nd annual Smart Data for Energy Summit that brings together a group of dedicated leaders across higher education, healthcare systems, federal facilities and industry to forge constructive pathways, spark new ideas, and expand collaboration across sectors.
