Early childhood is full of firsts. The sweetness of a child’s first laugh. The excitement of hearing those first words. The vulnerability of first steps. With all the firsts of early childhood, caregivers often come second—especially for those with limited access to resources. Room to Grow partners with caregivers and their families, and asks “What do you need?,” so that caregivers are equipped to focus on their children’s important firsts. By emphasizing a two-generational approach, we are able to effectively support families and children along their many developmental milestones, so that families and their children can thrive from the start, and for the long term. Since our founding in 1998, Room to Grow has provided over 4,000,000 baby and toddler items worth over $31 million to nearly 6,000 families. Did you know? Speech and language development is at its peak throughout the first three years of life, and reading books to children is one of the most important activities for early success in this area. In fact… ?? In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. ?? Parents and caregivers who read to their 2-year-olds for 11 minutes or more per day had stronger reading, spelling, and grammar skills in Grades 3 and 5. ?? Research has found that young children whose parents read to them daily have been exposed to at least 290,000 more words by the time they enter kindergarten than kids who aren’t read to regularly. ?? Reading 3-5 days per week to children increases their literacy skills by 6 months. Reading 6-7 days per week increases their literacy skills by approximately 12 months.
