I hosted a super fun developer meetup last night. Thank you Richard Wong, Edith Yeung, Chris McCann, Matt McLaughlin, Kelly C. Elizabeth Candelaria and my team at Race Capital for the fun conversation. Here are my Top 10 Advices for founders on How to Recruit, Build, and Scale World Class Engineering Teams 1) As a founder, remember that you are the chief advocate and salesperson for your team, customers, investors, and partners. 2) Attract, build relationships with, and hire engineers who share your vision to change the world. 3) When assembling your founding team, personally recruit the best engineers; this critical task cannot be delegated to recruiters. 4) Hire engineers based on their talent and skills, not their age or prestigious titles from large companies. 5) Empower your top engineers by making them feel important—grant them status and show them respect. 6) Celebrate small wins with your team; these moments build morale and unity. 7) Prioritize speed over perfection; rapid iteration trumps flawless code in the early stages. 8) Encourage employee referrals by offering equity or bonuses as incentives. 9) If you're unwilling to scale your team, reconsider starting a company—growth is essential. 10) In the early stages, foster in-person collaboration; remote work can hinder team cohesion. #hiring #funding #engineering #building #startups #earlystage #thegrind #engineer #teambuilding

?? Sharing Some Exciting News! ?? The road to $7.0 million ..... In May 2023 I made the decision with two friends, Igor Boshoer & Will Chertoff to take a plunge and start a company, leaving my dream-job at Netflix behind to kick-off Clerk Chat. We had already been building nights and weekends while each of our partners somehow tolerated our unbalanced lifestyles. Truth be told, we didn't start off with a grandiose vision of disrupting an industry like telecom through AI. Rather we are just three friends who wanted to create something and challenge ourselves every single day. We delayed funding as long as possible, building a small, lean team of superstars who believed in our mission - but mostly believed in each other. The path of entrepreneurship is grueling and forged in a lot of existential moments for better and for worse. Most people shouldn't do it - and with my prior startup journey taking a huge mental toll on me, I thought I'd never do it again. This is why today’s announcement that Clerk Chat has secured $7.0M in funding to accelerate our mission of making every business conversational, is such a significant milestone. I’ve never been one to celebrate funding, preferring to deliver real value to real customers, but this is a meaningful moment for so many people at the company and in my life that it is worthy to take pause and celebrate them since it reflects their collective hard work. A huge shout out to the teams at HF0, Race Capital, Mento vc and AltaIR Capital who took early bets on our team. People always ask me, what was the most difficult event you ever experienced as a CEO, I never directly answered this question, mostly because it was so painful. 23 years ago today, BEA Systems lost 2 hero employees. Ed Felt, one of our most talented and beloved engineers, was on his weekly visit from New Jersey to San Francisco on United Flight 93 to work on the WebLogic transaction engine. I don’t think the Internet world as we know it would be where it is now without Ed. Ken Basnicki, our marketing director, was attending a financial conference at the World Trade Center. Ken’s energy was intoxicating, he was so well loved by his colleagues. Nothing prepares anyone, CEO or not, to get a call of employee’s life lost on duty. People often question me about the state of the world, and I must admit, it isn't in a great place with ongoing conflicts and a lack of peace. As a technologist, I am thrilled about the rapid technological advancements unfolding before us – from the impressive ASIC developments (big congrats to Jonathan Ross and my friends at Groq!!) to the emergence of AI-based middleware solutions, and the outrageously cool and productive GenAI applications - all paving the way for unprecedented levels of automation. What truly excites me, however, is the next generation of talent.
