Rondo is thrilled to be a finalist for Bloomberg's BNEF Pioneers award, in Challenge 1: Making light industry more sustainable. "The energy transition has made many of the easier early gains, and there are now clear paths to decarbonization in a range of sectors, such as clean power generation and transport. Large swathes of industry, however, have remained stubbornly difficult to decarbonise. Today, one-third of industrial emissions are derived from ‘light’ industries such as pulp and paper, food and beverage production, textiles, and glass and ceramics. With this challenge, BNEF was looking for technologies that address the environmental impact of this group of lighter industries. The selected finalists focus on industrial heat pumps and thermal energy storage as a pathway to heat electrification, alongside ways of making the textile industry more environmentally friendly." https://lnkd.in/eXuu3diy

"Thermal batteries?store excess electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar as heat in materials like bricks or graphite, which can reach temperatures exceeding 3,000°F. Rondo Energy deployed its first commercial thermal battery in California, storing solar energy as heat in clay bricks. According to reports, the solution enables storage of more energy per pound than lithium-ion at only 10% of the cost. The Rondo Heat Battery (RHB) replaces fossil-fired boilers with heat derived from intermittent renewables; at the same time, RHBs stimulate the production of more renewable electricity through their ability to absorb low-cost (or excess) electricity, and turn it into low-cost heat. The end result? A cleaner and more reliable electric grid, and low-cost, zero-carbon heat for industrial facilities.
