Think about it—a video editor is responsible for shaping the messaging of your business to your customers through your marketing. I’ve hired over 100 video editors for podcasts, e-commerce brands, agencies, etc., and for anyone looking to hire editors, here are 4 tips to help you find a top-tier, god-like editor who will not only boost your marketing performance but also save you a lot of time and energy: 1. Provide a video reference: In your job application, include a link to a video (or multiple videos) that showcases the quality or style of editing you’re seeking. This could be your own video, a competitor’s, or any example that reflects the standard you’re striving for. Ask candidates to share something they’ve edited that closely matches the reference. 2. Loom videos for A-players: Ask candidates to introduce themselves via a Loom video. I’ve found that those who take the time to record a personalized video are often more willing to put in the work. It’s a great way to get a sense of the candidate’s commitment and filter out those who aren’t willing to go the extra mile. 3. Expand your job search: You may need to invest a bit to get your job listing in front of the right people. Consider posting on job boards in regions like the Philippines, Latin America, and South Africa, where you can find talented editors at a much lower rate. 4. Small trial task: In your job application, include a small test. Provide raw footage and ask candidates to edit a short 10-15 second clip, such as the hook for an ad or a brief video.
