It's been a massive week for one of our clients, Mockingbird.nyc, who hosted their soft opening last night, reached over 1,000 followers on Instagram before even officially opening, and were featured in the Brooklyn Paper ? Mockingbird is a Zero-Proof Cocktail Bar in Park Slope, Brooklyn. They ONLY serve non-alcoholic cocktails and beers, which was slightly confusing to us at first, being Irish, but once we got over that hurdle, it was fine. Both in the US and Ireland, there is a HUGE trend of more and more people not drinking as much as their parents did... Aside from our anecdotal evidence of run clubs popping up all over the place, saunas all over our Instagram feeds and the slow death of the "local", there are already some pretty damning statistics about the future of the alcohol industry: 1. 14% of St. James's Gate Guinness output will be 0.0 in 2025. 2. 0.0 Guinness sales rose 50% in 2024 in Ireland 3. Gen Z in the US consume 1/3 less alcohol than their millennial counterparts at the same age. 4. U.S. average weekly alcohol consumption dropped from 4.0 drinks in 2019 to 3.6 drinks in 2021. We've thoroughly enjoyed working with them for the past few months, growing their social footprint and helping them bring their vision for Mockingbird to more people. Let’s be real, bad reviews happen to every business…even to some of the best establishments…any spot can have an off day! The worst thing to do is ignore them! Handle them head-on, learn from the mistake and show your customer you have their back and are grateful for their insight on improving. If handled correctly some of those reviews can even be a chance for a win ?? So, exactly how should you handle those humbling reviews? ??Don’t hide, respond: As mentioned above…don’t avoid negative reviews. Respond quickly and directly, not just for the reviewer, but for everyone reading (over 51% of customers read review platforms these days). ??Own it: Acknowledge the reviewer’s frustration and apologize for any shortcomings in the customer's experience. Taking ownership demonstrates transparency and a genuine desire to resolve the issue. ?? Dig deeper: Don’t just sit on the review. Find out exactly what happened…then brainstorm a plan to fix it! ??Compensate: If it’s pretty bad we suggest compensating the customer with a discount or else a free meal next time they visit. But make sure to ask them for two things: 1. To share proof of purchase with a receipt or else the last 4 digits of the card used. You don’t want to risk people writing bad reviews who didn’t even go to your spot just in an attempt to get a free meal. 2. To let you know when they will be joining you so you will be able to provide them with the ultimate experience to try to get that negative review updated to a positive one. ??Take it private: Sometimes a public platform isn’t the best place to solve problems. When offering any form of compensation a dm is definitely the way to go. Public compensation may encourage unwarranted negative reviews from people looking for a freebie… It will also impress the customer and show you really care about their negative experience.
