January 20 is #MartinLutherKingJrDay. In celebration, #RomanMediaWorks is reposting this wonderful story sharing the connection between #RMW's President and CEO, Roman Holton, and his family, with the history of #MartinLutherKingJr.
#RomanMediaWorks is proud to celebrate Black History Month. Roman Holton, President and CEO of Roman MediaWorks and his family, share a strong personal story to the Civil Rights struggle of the 1960’s. Roman was almost twelve years old when Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He accompanied his mother, known by her friends as “Stein” on the train trip from Washington DC to Atlanta for the funeral. Stein was a long time friend with the King family and needed to be there in person for Mrs. King. At the cemetery, Roman’s mother, with Roman in tow, was able to get close enough to Mrs. King to be recognized and embraced.??She was invited to visit the King home later that day. When Stein and Roman arrived, they were immediately escorted to the bedroom where Mrs. King was lying on her bed surrounded by family and friends. Roman’s mother embraced Mrs. King and introduced the young Roman. Mrs. King hugged Roman and gave him a personalized signed program from the Funeral. As they left the room, a tall gentleman entered to pay his respects. Roman was told by his mother the man was the great singer and humanitarian, Harry Belafonte. One Final Note. On the train ride back to Washington, Roman and his mother are seated in the dining car next to an older gentleman. Roman showed the man his signed funeral program. The man was impressed and offered $500.00 cash to buy it. While $500.00 was a lot of money to a 12-year-old boy, Roman made the wise decision to hold on to his piece of American Black History. Just a brief encounter of one young boy on his journey thru African American History. #RomanMediaWorks in saluting the rich legacy of Black History Month. #RomanMediaWorks is proud to celebrate Black History Month by sharing personal recollections from our President and CEO, Roman Holton. Roman's grandmother, Leslie R Dimmins, worshipped at the 16th Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, which was tragically bombed on September 16, 1963, killing four girls and injuring twenty parishioners. She later moved the family to Montgomery, Alabama where they attended the historic Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where a young pastor by the name of Martin Luther King Jr. led the congregation. MLK officiated the wedding of Roman’s parents, Athelstein L Dimmins and Roman T. Adair, and 2 years later offered the blessing of the congregation to their son, Roman. Roman’s daughters were blessed by their pastor in 2000 and 2004 in Washington D.C.'s historic Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. They both wore the same baby gown that Roman wore when Dr King presented him to the Dexter Ave Baptist Church. As we reflect on his life and legacy, we honor his profound impact on the Defense Department and DLA. From decommissioning the presidential yacht to responding to the cancellation of the B-1A bomber program, DLA played a pivotal role in Carter’s vision for a government that served the people. Under his administration, DLA gained its worldwide remit, supported the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and began its long-standing collaboration with FEMA . ??
