It was brutally cold in Kansas City this week, yet project schedules don’t pause… even when the building has no electricity, running water, or heat.? Over a 3-day period, we had a LiDAR team scanning the historic Scarritt Arcade in downtown KC.? The temperature outside ranging from -3° F to 14° F.? Inside the building it was not much better.? Moisture from breathing condensed on stocking caps and neck gaiters then froze.? While working outside, if moisture got on the tablet screen, it froze instantly. ?To improve the performance of the tablet and its battery, it spent most of the time under a coat. ?It was a challenge to stay hydrated.? Hot chocolate was solid ice and a Powerade was slushy within a couple of hours. ?The blue tape on the side of the scanner (see pictures) is securing a hand warmer beneath or inside the machine's battery compartment. ?The temperature on-site was well below the scanner’s min. operating limit of 14° F. ?The warmers protected the batteries from damage and extended their charge. Despite the weather challenges, the beautiful architecture of the Scarritt Arcade interior was documented.?
