Welcome back to Women We Love Wednesdays! Next up - Janessa's pick. With a local elementary school recently renamed after her, Frances Scott has made waves (even posthumously) in our community since the 1950s, when she was hired as one of only four Black teachers in the entirety of Spokane Public Schools. She was an activist, an educator, and an attorney (to name a few of her many accomplishments) - but to Janessa, she was also her grandma's dear friend, a woman who treated Janessa like her own granddaughter and was full of warmth and love. Frances was a powerhouse. After she'd been an educator at Rogers High School for a couple of decades, she decided to pursue a legal education, and became Spokane's first Black female attorney in 1979. At the time, there were 17 other Black women in Washington licensed to practice law. She often spoke out about the injustices she experienced growing up. Frances worked with the NAACP to increase jobs for Black people in Spokane, and believed in the importance of Black people holding professional roles. Frances believed in nonviolence, but not in mincing words. In a 1982 talk, she said “We must exercise some degree of militancy … against slumlords, against Klansmen, against people who want no minorities in their neighborhoods, against racist textbooks and against politicians who thrive on bigotry. Otherwise, people will say in the future, ‘You were there. What did you do about it?’?” In short, she was a badass. Frances passed away in 2010 at age 88, leaving a lasting impact on our community that will be felt for generations to come. ??

“I’m just asking for family unity. That’s all we are asking for.” We are heartbroken by the news that, for the first time since it was established in 1980, the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program has been suspended indefinitely. Thank you Nour, for your courage and vulnerability in sharing your family's story. We will continue to stand in solidarity with you, as well as all immigrants and refugees, in this challenging season. Read Nour's story at the The Spokesman-Review, thanks to reporter Monica Carrillo-Casas: https://buff.ly/sjzH5tO #supportimmigrants #supportrefugees #rootedinwelcome #wewelcomerefugees #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #donate #immigrant #immigration #refugee

  • Happy International Women's Day????♀??? Today, we want to highlight representation of women in media... particularly behind the camera. Some stats from the Celluloid Ceiling report: ??? Only 5% of cinematographers on the top 100 films of 2024 were women. ??? On those same 100 films, only 11% were directed by a woman—down 3 percentage points from 14% in 2023. ??? In 2024, 70% of films employed 10+ men in key behind-the-scenes roles - but only 8% employed 10+ women. We've come a long way - but there's still progress to be made. This International Women's Day, let's celebrate with some powerful films that showcase the talent of women in the industry! See end slides for some recommendations ?? #womeninfilm #IWD #AccelerateAction

  • Happy Women's History Month! And WELCOME to Historic Women We Love Wednesdays!?? First off, Payton's choice...filmmaker Agnès Varda??? During the French New Wave of cinema, Varda was one of the only female filmmakers paving a way in a male-dominated space. Known for capturing folks marginalized by society, especially focusing on the female perspective, the camera gave her a voice. Her profound attention to detail has inspired generations of artists across her work as a photographer, filmmaker, and exhibition curator. Payton's Subaru is named after this legend, and considers the Agnès Varda box set to be their most valuable possession. If you want to watch her work, Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) and Faces Places (2017) are a lovely place to start! ??????

  • These youth are GOING PLACES. Tackling concerns like Mental health, climate change, food access, food waste, and more - What a joy to learn from the Youth Wellness Zone students from On Track Academy! Last week, they presented their projects and findings to the community at Spokane City Hall. Mayor Lisa Brown stopped by to see their work in partnership with Northeast Community Center - it is truly an inspiration. We can't wait to see what changes they will make in the world... now is the time for the community to listen and implement wellness improving initiatives like these. ??
