Rodale Institute is partnering with GreenWave, a global network of regenerative ocean farmers, on a three-year research project to explore how ocean-derived biostimulants, specifically a kelp-based product, can enhance soil health, crop productivity, and climate resilience. Led by Dr. Dinesh Panday, the study will evaluate these natural inputs on lettuce and sweet pepper production, aiming to provide farmers with sustainable tools to improve soil microbiology, increase yields, and promote ocean conservation ? Powdery mildew can slash lettuce yields by up to 30%, but a new greenhouse study at Rodale Institute explores a solution! Researchers tested the impact of pre-transplant UV light exposure and a post-planting application of?OMRI-certified fungicide (MilStop) on disease control, yield, and nutritional quality. ?? Key Findings: ? UV-B + MilStop significantly reduced powdery mildew. ? MilStop boosted yield by 44.8%! ? UV-B exposure increased total amino acid concentrations. These findings highlight the potential of integrating UV light treatments and fungicide applications as effective, sustainable strategies for managing powdery mildew, improving lettuce yield, and maintaining nutritional quality in regenerative organic systems.?? ?? ??Seeding the Future In 2020, Jason and Deb DeSalvo launched Cold Brook Farm in Oldwick, New Jersey with the goal of changing perceptions of what farming can be in their community. With support from Rodale Institute's Organic Consulting team, they built a 43-acre operation that reflected their commitment to regenerative organic practices from the start. The DeSalvos today are raising grains, fruits, and vegetables, and they have planted a permaculture forest. They’ve restored the creek that runs through their property, and they’re powering their home and farm entirely on solar and geothermal energy. They’re also connecting with nearby growers to develop the infrastructure to support local grain production. In 2018, the William Penn Foundation, Rodale Institute, and Stroud Water Research Center began a long-term research project on the impacts of agricultural practices on the Delaware River Watershed and residents of Philadelphia. We have been working to identify the most effective water-friendly agricultural production methods through rigorous research. Findings from this 6-year study include: ? Higher carbon in organic farming systems ? Higher levels of water infiltration and greater water holding capacity in the organic farming systems ? Microbes are important for water holding capacity We also identified improved nutrient concentration in the run-off stream studied.
