Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is a retail franchisor and manufacturer of premium confections. The Company is based in the charming old-west town of Durango located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, in southwestern Colorado. From its 53,000 square foot plant, the Company offers a franchise business opportunity in premium retail selling handcrafted caramel apples and classic confections and chocolates. It manufactures an extensive line of premium chocolate candies and other confectionery products to supply its many franchise locations, delivered fresh by its fleet of refrigerated trucks. The chocolate factory produces approximately 300 chocolate candies and other confectionery products, using proprietary recipes developed primarily by its master candy maker. These products include many varieties of clusters, caramels, creams, meltaways, truffles and molded chocolates. Individual stores prepare a variety of caramel and candy apples, fudge, chocolate items and confections in full view of the customer using traditional cooking utensils such as copper kettles on gas-fired stoves and marble slab cooling tables.

We had the great opportunity to participate in the AICC, The Independent Packaging Association Student Packaging Design Competition this year. University students from around the nation submitted designs for a free standing corrugated display for our brand and retail stores. We were absolutely blown away by the entries! The innovation and design detail that were in so many of these projects was more than we expected and it was an incredibly competitive field when it came time to select winners for structure, graphics, and best in show. These students really took time to understand our brand and our functional needs and presented some top-class displays. Congratulations to this Cal Poly Team that took home top honors and to all the other student teams who partipicated. Thank you for letting us be a part of this impressive event.

To make malted milk balls, you drizzle melted chocolate over candy and tumble ingredients together so the pieces get coated. Then, you fire up a shop vacuum. The vacuum provides cool air to help the chocolate set as creamy layers are added to create the sweet treat, said Rich Hartel, a food science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hartel runs the university’s?Candy School?— also known as the Confectionery Technology Course — which started in 1963 and has become so popular that it has a waitlist of people who want to attend. “The course is … certainly the only comprehensive one of its kind that does lab stuff like this, that covers all of candy,” Hartel said. Each year, about 34 employees from major candy companies come to Babcock Hall for two weeks to learn the science of candy. They practice making an array of treats, including chocolate and jelly beans. This year’s participants came from Russell Stover Chocolates, Ferrara, Mars Wrigley, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and other businesses, where they work in research and development, quality control and other similar jobs.

My first thought… ENGLISH TOFFEE, why not today? The team member smiled and greeted me as I stepped into the store. My eyes immediately darted to the toffee in the case.?? ? As she was ringing me up, I looked around and saw this sign! SHARE THE JOY! ? With a smile on my face, I walked to the gate and sat down to eat my toffee. It was deliciously everything I had hoped for…. And left me craving for the next time! I often say I “feel like a kid in a candy store,” but that day I really was!
