Today at Rocketship Public Schools the D.C. region kicked off our quarterly data/ professional development day. Executive Director Zakiya Sackor and I opened the day demonstrating how we are making magic happen this school year. The way we dug deep into the data in our breakout sessions was challenging but so worth it!

From MDRC's InPractice blog! Students still face challenges due to learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and school leaders must still make difficult decisions about how best to address students’ unfinished learning. High-dosage tutoring — a personalized learning effort consisting of small-group instruction for at least 30 minutes a day, three days a week — is one research-backed option. Brenda Plazola from Rocketship Public Schools sat down with MDRC to share her thoughts on developing a supportive dynamic for tutors in the classroom.

The kids are not alright. It is clear that across our country, our children are not only suffering from COVID-related learning loss, but that many adults have decided to accept this as the new norm through lowering state standards or taking little action to create change. We cannot simply give up on a generation of kids. And at Rocketship, we never will. We are working harder than ever to meet our students' needs - through personalized learning, mental health supports, daily attendance calls, home visits, and so much more. We know that our community schools can and will get back to and above the pre-COVID achievement levels that we are know are possible for our kids. https://lnkd.in/gSMT6aPp

Teaching acceptance isn't easy. You can tell kids about disabilities with words, but it doesn't hit that point of understanding and compassion that interaction does. Percy spends every day of his life being unapologetically his authentic self, and the students at his school see him for who he is. Last night was a rough one in our home and he was still sleepy, so he laid down during launch. No one looked at him weird. No one stared and giggled or whispered. They know this is Percy and this is what he does. Yesterday he was laying on the ground pretending to swim. Same thing. #MeaningfulInclusion is good for more than just the special needs students. It gives the general education students an education they cannot get when the special needs students are secluded. Thank you Rocketship Public Schools for providing this level of understanding
