RPL at UCSD is a student-led research group focused on the development of the technology that will get us to Mars.

关于我们

The Rocket Propulsion Laboratory is a student organization at the University of California, San Diego founded in Spring 2017. We are dedicated to innovating in the aerospace industry, with a particular focus on rockets! Join us on our mission to push the bounds of collegiate rocketry! The RPL team is currently designing Ariel, a LOX/Methane engine. Innovative cooling techniques, an advanced igniter, and reliable injection put this engine in a class of its own. A year with many firsts?? This academic year marked many unique milestones for RPL. More significantly, it marked RPL’s first ever static fire with the Hermes engine, RPL’s first ever development of multistage rocket with Osiris, and of course Daedalus’ first year in the works. Thank you to all our members and sponsors who made this year a historic one. From left to right: RPL full body, Phoenix, Daedalus, Osiris, Hermes, Avionics, and Analysis.

On May 25, 2024 RPL's Hermes team completed the organization's first static fire of an experimental solid rocket motor. Due to the hard work of the Hermes team the last six months, the static fire was a complete success, and we're excited to be making our way towards launch! Special thanks to the Qualcomm Institute Prototyping Lab, the UC San Diego Makerspace, and all our sponsors for being integral in completing this milestone.

On March 1, HKN Kappa Psi welcomed Clark Middle School to the UC San Diego campus as part of our chapter’s outreach initiative! Organized by Om Rabadia, Thomas Rexin, and Katherine Vu, the tour consisted of a walk around campus, a visit to the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory and the Design and Innovation Makerspace, and a presentation from Project in a Box. By exposing these kids to real-world applications of engineering and sharing our experiences as college students, we hope to have inspired the next generation of students in STEM! Thank you to Clark Middle School for taking the time to visit, and to HKN officers + Outreach team, EDS Pals + UCSD student tour guides, and our friends at Rocket Propulsion Lab, Project in a Box, and Makerspace for making this an enjoyable and interactive day for the kids! If you would like to join our Outreach team and teach at local San Diego K-12 schools, please register on our portal (portal.hknucsd.com)! Our next event will be held on April 11th with the Army and Navy Academy. Credit for CSE/MAE/ECE 198, 2-unit, pass/no pass elective classes, is available for interested UCSD students within those respective departments.
