"Samples of both topsoil and cores a little more than 3 feet deep had similar soil organic carbon levels in all three types of test plots, while the soil cores from diversified cropping systems produced more carbon dioxide when incubated in the lab for a little more than a year." "But proving that soil compaction hurt yields was tough. The impact of previous soil compaction in any one year depends upon growing conditions that season.” Sizing equipment helps limit soil compaction. Learn more about how this phenom was once a taboo concept, but is now accepted (and managed) as a yield limiter and soil health challenge in this recent Farm Progress article: https://lnkd.in/gTBg29vp . #soilcompaction #yieldlimiter #controlledtraffic #crops #plant2025 #grow2025 #soilhealth #notill #striptill

"Drought in the Southwest led to lower starch content on average compared to other regions where a slight increase in starch content was observed. When looking at starch digestibility pre-ensiling, most regions seem to show improvement, compared to 2023." "The runoff risk advisory forecast includes a map showing short-term runoff risk for manure application. The maps account for soil saturation, temperature, and precipitation on a scale of 1.5 square-mile grids. The National Weather Service updates the forecast four times daily." Tis the season for high manure runoff risk. Check out the handy runoff risk advisory forecast tool offered by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection before you spread. "We fed incremental replacement rates of corn silage with male sterile sorghum. We used a 0 percent replacement, 25 percent replacement of the corn silage with male sterile sorghum, and 50 percent. Twenty-five percent was the group that yielded the best results.” New sorghum varieties offer significant contributions to dairy diets - especially for those producers working within the confines of water scarcity and conservation. "Field crops in a corn-soy-wheat rotation grown conventionally – with tillage and no cover crops – did not show an increase in soil carbon over 25 years. However, when a winter cover crop was added, these fields sequestered carbon rapidly – increasing by up to 25% over 25 years. Likewise, no-till practices, in which seeds are planted into unplowed soil using specialized equipment, also built soil carbon, but only half as fast as the rate of cover crops." More on the latest research identifying farming practices that can build soil carbon in this recent release from Morning Ag Clips: https://lnkd.in/gDtbXJxp . #carbonbuilding #carboncredits #covercrops #notill #soilcarbon #sustainability #climatechange

"The experience to date with high oleic soybeans suggests the economics for on-farm production are much more favorable than traditional on-farm grain production. The nutritional fit of high oleic soybeans is a good discussion point with your nutritionist; however, one common talking point has been inconsistencies in on-farm roasting, resulting in cow-level diet changes."
