Risk Appetite: The Defining Edge for High Performance I’m spending my weekend at a cheer competition. What I’ve observed is those squads willing (and able) to take the greatest risk have a great chance at outperforming others. Risk taking and risk management done right offers significant competitive advantage. In the world of credit unions, the difference between high-performing institutions and those that settle for mediocrity often comes down to the same factor: risk appetite. It’s not about chasing high-risk opportunities recklessly. Instead, it’s about having a clear, strategic understanding of the risks you’re willing to take—and having the frameworks in place to manage those risks effectively. The most successful credit unions aren’t afraid to push boundaries. They take calculated risks, driven by data, experience, and a strong risk management culture. The key? Aligning risk appetite with long-term strategy while ensuring that safeguards are robust, adaptive, and built to support growth, not stifle it. *A strong risk appetite without effective risk management is just gambling. *Great risk management without any appetite for risk leads to stagnation.
