Keeping someone in prison costs the taxpayer ￡51,000 per year, while helping them get a job costs a fraction of that. Employers who take on TN candidates are getting motivated, hardworking employees who appreciate the second chance. The Secret to Success? Real Support Unlike many government-led schemes, Tempus Novo doesn’t just hand out jobs and walk away. Each person gets a dedicated caseworker, often a former prison officer, who helps them adjust to working life and supports them for at least 12 months. Steve Freer and Val Wawrosz understand the struggles of ex-offenders firsthand—they worked inside prisons for decades. They know what’s needed: practical, no-nonsense support, not bureaucracy. Their caseworkers act as a bridge between ex-offenders and employers, making sure both sides feel supported. “We don’t believe in handouts. We believe in hands up,” says Steve Freer. “When you show someone a real way forward, you’d be amazed at how many will grab it.” A Model That Works—Time to Scale Up Tempus Novo’s model isn’t just a moral success—it’s a financial and social win.
