The IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference (#ITSC) was a blast! Thanks to Ehsan Hashemi and Jonas M?rtensson for chairing. I co-chaired the Workshops and presented our paper on MEGA-DAgger: Imitation Learning with Multiple Imperfect Experts https://lnkd.in/emx3KpZ6. I enjoyed the good company of Ahmed Hussein, Brendan Morris, Henry Liu, Vahid M., Zhong-Ping Jiang, Hamid Taghavifar, David Isele, Pushkin Kachroo, Shaurya Agrawal and more.

Last week, the ForzaETH race team participated in the F1Tenth Foundation 21st F1TENTH Autonomous Grand Prix at IROS. ????? At the race, we were faced with extremely grippy carpet floor, requiring teams to extract 100% of performance from both their hardware and software. This was in contrast to the robustness tuning the team had been hard at work with, after experiences with slippery racetracks at past races. Faced with this "out of distribution" environment, the team worked hard on-site, leaving no stone unturned as we sought to shave tenths of seconds from our lap times. Our efforts resulted in a 7.14s lap over the roughly 35m track. This is an average speed of ~5m/s (18kph), significant considering the curvature of the track! The car accelerated at 8 m/s2 and braked at 20 m/s2 – accelerations that mimic full-scale racing. This was sufficient for us to qualify in 2nd place. Unfortunately, in the head-to-head shootout, the team's high-risk, high-reward strategy to minimize laptime bit us as we crashed out of our match which would decide if we would advance to the final. We ended up with a 3rd place finish, behind our competitors Lukasz Sztyber and Scuderia Segfault. Despite this, we still can be proud of our Race Stack, especially in head-to-head mode, where our car demonstrated advanced abilities to estimate, predict, and plan to overtake opponents - made possible by our recent Predictive Spliner publication. Grateful to have wrapped up an incredible experience at IROS 2024 in Abu Dhabi! ?? During the conference, Chinmay Samak and I delivered a presentation on how F1Tenth Foundation and AutoDRIVE Ecosystem can come together to promote reproducibility and benchmarking in robotics research through competitions and digital twinning. Here's a glimpse of what we presented: ?? Presented an overview of F1TENTH and AutoDRIVE Ecosystem and highlighted their individual as well as combined capabilities. Stressed on the open-source nature, and availability of benchmarks, standards, scaffolded experiments, curated datasets, research and education material, software development kits, simulation tools, hardware testbeds, global competitions, detailed documentation and an international community – all ready to support #reproducibility and #benchmarking in robotics research. ?? Discussed the digital twinning of F1TENTH racecars and racetracks using AutoDRIVE Ecosystem, thereby bridging the gap between simulation and reality from both the ends (#real2sim and #sim2real). Described the F1TENTH Sim Racing framework developed using AutoDRIVE Ecosystem, highlighting how we leveraged the best practices like distributed computing, headless and graphical rendering paradigms, and Docker, Inc containerization for dependency management and workload isolation to yield reliable software reproducibility. ?? Highlighted the importance of #data in reproducibility and benchmarking, and demonstrated the framework’s capability to record and replay various data streams in a time-synchronized fashion along with the ability to automate data analysis and decision making. Presented in-depth analysis of race metrics (lap count and time, collision count, total and adjusted race time, best lap time, etc.) and vehicle KPIs (pose, twist, acceleration, wheel displacement, actuator feedbacks, LIDAR pointcloud, FPV camera frame, etc.) using Foxglove. But the adventure didn't quite end there! Chinmay Samak and I also had the incredible opportunity to serve as the race stewards and co-organize the 21st F1TENTH Autonomous Grand Prix. The event was a thrilling success where innovation and competition collided to push the boundaries of autonomous racing! ?? A heartfelt expression of gratitude to our advisor, Dr. Venkat N. Krovi for his continued support. We are truly grateful for the chance to be a part of such a dynamic community. We had the chance to connect with some of the greatest minds in the field from academia as well as industry, discuss our research and potential engagements. Yet another successful deployment of the ??1?????????? ???????????????????? ???????????? ?????????????????????? @ ?????????2024! ?? ???????? ???????????????? took the gold by staying on the top of the leaderboard throughout the time-trials and the head-to-head races, maintaining flawless runs with zero collisions and setting the fastest lap of the competition well under 7 seconds. ?? ???????????????? ???????????????? secured the silver, demonstrating consistent aggressive performance despite encountering a terrible crash while practicing, which messed up their vehicle’s wheel alignment. During one of the practice sessions, the team pushed their vehicle so much that it resulted in an untipped rollover! ?? ???????????????? claimed the bronze, exhibiting crazy accelerations over the straight and controlled oversteering in the corners. They demonstrated some of the most exciting overtakes while competing for the third position. ?? ?????????? claimed the special award for being the best first-timer, managing to complete multiple laps despite facing communication issues. ?? A special mention to the ???? ??1?????????? ???????? for their dedication and perseverance. As one of the first teams from the UAE, they stood their ground against some highly experienced teams despite having less than 2 months of preparation. Proud to announce our team and I's participation in the F1Tenth Foundation race at IROS 2024, hosted in Abu Dhabi, UAE for the first time in the Middle East! As one of the first teams ever in the UAE and the Arab World to participate in such a competition, we were able to show performance in a competition that is known to be not that friendly for first-timers, despite having only less than 2 months of preparation. We are going to improve and be even more competitive, so stay tuned for more achievements! An amazing thanks to the team members (including Nevan Thomas, haya chaudhry, Naqiyah Rajkotwala, Salem Al Haddad, and more!)
