    Why Do Machine Shops Utilize Machine Tending Robots? Spoiler Alert: For the same reasons machine shops utilize CNC machines! The CNC first CNC was patented more than 60 years ago. But the CNC has only been widely accepted for the last 40 years. Computer controlled programming ensures ensures tighter precision for machined parts. Robots are calibrated for highly accurate and repetitive insertion. CNC machines are certainly more efficient and more cost effective to run compared to a human operating an analog mill or lathe. A world-class machinist can create magic with an old Bridgeport but that took time. Robots are significantly more efficient than humans over the long run.     It's Finally Friday so it is Time for Friday Features! Many of your features are unique in what they bring to your operation. This feature is a feature because we don't have it. Software Fees? What? While having a conversation with a potential customer, she mentioned that they've looked at every offering in the CNC Automation world. She went on to say there are many similarities in the offerings. But three things make RoboJob-USA stand out: 1. Raw and finished parts management is the best in the industry. 2. The ease of use for the entire system. 3. The software is just so easy. Then she said, "What about the annual software fees?" When she said that, I spilled my coffee all over my shirt and almost splashed her. We don't have annual software fees. Never have. This is a mature product that has been around for 16 years. You aren't getting product tweaks, and bug fixes every few weeks. There are thousands of complicated engineering decisions that have created a software package that is so simple and easy to use.     Evolution or Revolution of the Machine Operator In 1798, Eli Whitney invented Interchangeable parts and that changed manufacturing for ever. Without interchangeable parts, Ford's assembly line in 1913 would not have been impossible. Can you imagine operating without either of those two innovations? If you have a High Mix/Low Volume order pattern now, what would it be like without interchangeable parts? Both innovations came from the need to be more efficient and productive. Machine operators grew from the need to be more efficient and productive. When mills and lathes were manually run by machinists, that machinist was the machine operator. In the late 1980s, when the CNC machine became widely adapted, machine shops realized it was too expensive to have the machinist program the job and then stand around to load and unload the CNC. Too expensive in terms of actual cost because the machinist's hourly wage was worth more than the work required to load and unload the CNC. It was also too expensive in terms of opportunity cost. Do you want that #machinist doing a low value job like making parts, or do you want that machinist doing high value work like programming the next job and making sure the set up was perfect? Those are two very different jobs with very different skill set requirements. Because of that difference in skills and cost, the CNC machine operator job was born. Why waste the potential of a great machinist by having them run parts? Although earnings varied by geography, a machine operator earned about 40% less than a machinist. Was the creation of the machine operator evolution or revolution? Fast forward to today and human capital is more important than ever. And, great talent is harder to find and even harder to keep. Forty years later, the question is still the same. Do you want that human doing a low value job, or do you want them doing something that adds more value to the process? You don't need a consultant from Bain or McKinsey to give you the answer. All you need is the back of an envelope and a pencil. If you added a robot to tend the #CNC machine to do the low value work, how could that machine operator be redeployed to add more value in the process stream?
