RFO inspires adults and children to foster their interest and passion in astronomy and space.

关于我们

We inspire young people to pursue further education or careers in astronomy or related STEM fields. RFO offers public star parties, holds private observatory events for scouts, schools, and other youth-related non-profits, does outreach to schools, and facilitates the Striking Sparks program (which awards telescopes to students) and the Young Astronomers program (a club for youth interested in astronomy). RFO is almost all-volunteer run and typically serves about 9,000 visitors annually. The observatory houses a 40-inch reflector telescope, the largest telescope in Northern California that is accessible to the public; a robotic 20-inch research-grade, “CCD” telescope; and an 8”, two-meter long refractor telescope.

  • One of the observatory docents, Roger Boulanger, took this image of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS). The "anti-tail" is visible. This "tail" projects towards the sun in the opposite direction to the other tails (the larger ion tail and dust tails) and consists of larger dust particles left behind the comet. This is a long-period comet with a very large elliptical orbit around the sun and it will be visible again in 80,000 years. (So mark your calendars now!)

  • Join us on September 23rd for the first session of our Autumn Night Sky Class - a series of lectures on our Place in the Universe and the Constellations of the Seasons. ? This seasonal series (six classes) is designed for everyone from total beginners to experienced amateur observers. Whether you want to learn the constellations or have a telescope and want to expand your knowledge of viewing objects, these classes have something for you. The focus is on learning the night sky in a “geographic” sense…locating yourself in our solar system, our Milky Way and our local galaxy cluster neighborhoods! A few constellations are introduced in each class—their myths, history and interesting stars. We also cover deep sky objects such as the beautiful nebulae and clusters that never cease to awe and amaze. ? After each class (sky conditions permitting), we go outside to locate the constellations just presented. We then move to the Observatory’s telescopes to view objects within the featured constellations. ? For more information or to register visit rfo.simpletix.com ?
