Rematriating venture capital? This granddaughter of farmers, entrepreneurs, matriarchs, and an economist, has been selected as a 2025 Second Wave Apprentice ?? . I started the Rematriating Economies Apprenticeship journey 3 weeks ago in New Mexico. REA is about increasing representation of Indigenous wisdom in asset and fund management through resources, influence, and opportunities to build lasting economic power, including for Indigenous women. “Marcia, aren’t you already in venture?” I acknowledge I have built 16+ venture/entrepreneurship programs, invested in founders in the U.S. and in Latin America with social and/or environmental impact, and co-created communities and organizations behind the scenes. When I learned about REA, I felt a deep conviction that the people, lenses around design and care in REA were/are groundbreaking. That it was aligned and that I could belong. What a breath of fresh air to say I have so much more to learn and more to do. To keep unraveling. And to be in a cohort with wise and caring humans. Rematriating our economies? Beyond financial literacy and acumen, how does trauma impact how we personally AND professionally allocate capital? Coaching with indigenous lens? How will we allocate millions and millions in capital and wealth? I live within multiple realms. Eldest daughter. Sister. Family member. Friend. Colleague. Community member. Learning to be an autoimmune warrior. Ecuadorian. Immigrant to the U.S. Latina. From generations of Montubio people, Andean, Chinese, Spanish ancestors. “Am I too much if I’m *this* and *that* community?” Here I am. This space couldn't have arrived at a more critical time. ?? How can I keep bringing the lenses I grew up with in personal life into the venture spaces, communities, and ecosystems I’m in and will keep building? ?? What does the current Indigenous venture ecosystem look like? ?? How can I be a better weaver across communities in venture? ?? Where am I going, and how does it connect with how I’ve shown up? ??How can I go deeper on not only creating spaces of representation, but also try my best to not perpetuate practices that have excluded, caused scarcity mindsets, burned people out, extracted from nature etc. in venture??Because it's really hard. ?? What is the role of care, reciprocity, doing things for the collective, decolonization, and other practices that have been around me? ?? How does this go beyond the individual? I won’t have closure on these questions during the apprenticeship (release the perfectionism ??), but the complexity and nuance is precisely where I want to keep leaning in. Roanhorse Consulting and Trauma of Money are profound, thoughtful ecosystem builders. All thanks to them. More to come. #REA2025 #SecondWave #RematriatingEconomies #RegenerativeCapital #Wealth

?? We are beyond excited to announce the 2025 Placement Partners for the Rematriating Economies Apprenticeship! These eight incredible investment firms are generously offering their time, expertise, and commitment to support our Second Wave apprentices as they step into their investment careers. “REA provides crucial grounding in the philosophy and power dynamics of capital so that Indigenous women can step confidently into directing how funds flow. We know all too well that promising and thoughtful folks can get stuck in the loop of "can't get experience without a job, can't get a job without experience" as they try to break into finance, we're honored to be a partner in breaking that cycle,” shared Lauren Grattan, Co-Founder and CEO of Mission Driven Finance. These partners aren’t just offering potential placement—they’re building meaningful, long-term relationships with apprentices that will help them thrive in the investment sector. A massive thank you to these firms for their dedication to fostering the waterway of investment leaders ? ???? ?? We are building the future of finance—now it’s time for the capital system to catch up. Entrepreneurship in Indigenous communities is about agency, mobility, and self-determination—yet, 83% of U.S. entrepreneurs still cannot access formal financing. For Indigenous founders, the barriers are even steeper, an experience we understand intimately as an Indigenous-owned social enterprise. Traditional “friends & family” rounds are not an option, especially when our communities focus on wealth defined by shared values, not generational wealth. ?? In 2020, Indigenous businesses generated over $50 billion, with 60% led by women—yet they remain vastly underfunded, underrepresented, and underestimated. Despite this, Indigenous women start businesses twice as fast as their white counterparts, proving that the impact could be exponential with the right support. ?? The tide is shifting. In 2024, Native CDFIs received unprecedented investments, including: ? $76.32M from philanthropy ? $3M from the U.S. Treasury ? $103M from MacKenzie Scott These #catalyticfunds present a historic opportunity—but money alone isn’t enough. We need Indigenous-led intermediaries, investment vehicles designed with Indigenous founders at the center, and capital models that redefine risk on our terms. We need ready to go and aligned investors ready to weather the storm. That’s why Roanhorse Consulting, LLC (RCLLC) is doubling down on our commitment to Indigenous financial sovereignty. Through partnerships with Nusenda Credit Union, Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), Pacific Community Ventures (PCV) and others, we’re co-creating solutions that: ?? Redefine underwriting practices ?? Develop alternative capital vehicles ?? Bridge financial gaps for Indigenous entrepreneurs ?? Expand our relationship and kinship systems With the launch of Return on Indigenous (ROI), our startup studio, we are incubating game-changing initiatives like: ?? Rematriating Economies Apprenticeship (REA)—placing Indigenous women in investment roles ?? Center Native—expanding financial access in Native markets (www.centernative.com) ?? Indigenous wisdom and innovation are shaping the future. Our job is to thoughtfully weave capital solutions that don’t yet exist so that Indigenous people can achieve true agency, mobility, and liberation. ?? If you believe in a financial system that works for Native people, not against them, let’s connect and build together. The future is Indigenous, and we are building new worlds! ???? to Tallgrass Institute, Kate Finn, and the team for the invitation and to our friend and co-conspirator, Agnetha Jaime Gloshay, for dreaming of this work with us.
