On Imposter Syndrome: How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others and Recognize Your Own Unique Worth by Member Develop Manager Chris Booth. Recently, the Roadmap (https://lnkd.in/eBZYPEHN) team met to discuss Imposter Syndrome, and I shared that as a corporate speaking coach, I had worked with many executives who suffered from Imposter Syndrome and that I, as a person with a public speaking background and years of experience, also suffered from it as well from time-to-time. So . . . how do you overcome it? Well first, you have to define it. What is Imposter Syndrome? Imposter syndrome is that feeling of self-doubt when you start comparing yourself to others. It's walking into a room and thinking you don’t “measure up.” It’s the fear that, at any moment, you’ll be “found out” as unqualified or a fraud. And it doesn’t only affect new graduates or first-time job seekers; it can come and go at different stages of your career. The traditional advice is to “fake it till you make it,” but for someone dealing with imposter syndrome, this only intensifies the feeling that they’re already faking it. How I Overcame Imposter Syndrome So, how did I work through it? Here’s what helped: Acknowledgment: I accepted the feeling without judgment. Feeling like an imposter isn’t inherently good or bad, and it doesn’t make me “less than.” Identifying My Unique Value Proposition (UVP): I focused on what I, specifically, bring to the table. I’m driven, persistent, passionate about my work, compassionate toward others, and genuinely curious about how and why systems work. I’m always looking to understand and improve things. Seeking Help and Staying Humble: I’ve learned to ask for help and clarification when I need it. This humility is a strength, not a weakness. Trusting My Value: I remind myself that I was brought into each situation for a reason . . . because of my unique skills and perspective. Listening More Than I Talk: In situations where I feel out of my depth, I stay quiet and listen. You’d be surprised by how much you can learn when you let others speak. Saying “Yes, and…”: I approach all situations with an open mind, building on whatever comes my way. Why This Conversation Matters - by acknowledging that Imposter Syndrome is common and that it is something you can work through it takes away its power to paralyze you. Remember: You belong, you bring value, you are valued.
