We are approaching the final strides of construction of U.S. Naval Research Laboratory’s 5 MW cogeneration plant. ? Piping for various systems, including gas, control air, steam & HRSG was tested ? Heat tracing and insulation are ongoing ??Control wiring for the turbine, HRSG, gas compressor & switchgear was pulled; terminations have started ??Stormwater detention area was excavated; backfilled with stone; piping installed ? Crews are working towards energizing switchgear & equipment in coming weeks ? Last evening, at the Boston Society for Architecture Awards Gala, Harvard University’s District Energy Facility (DEF) won the Harleston Parker People's Choice Award, BSA’s highest honor. It is our distinct pleasure to congratulate the project team on this esteemed achievement, which is a direct reflection of the expertise, ingenuity, dedication, and teamwork invested in this endeavor from the very start. The new 58,000 SF District Energy Facility is a lower-carbon, climate resistant system that provides heating, cooling, and electricity to Harvard's new Allston campus. The design team, led by Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects, Inc., addressed challenges such as a narrow footprint, proximity to the Charles River, and future expansion needs when designing the facility, delivering nothing short of an exceptional space that literally puts energy on display. RMF’s project team included Bill Mahoney, Jared Markle, PE, John Williamson, Stephen Pollard P.E., and Elizabeth Nolder, whose dedication was integral to the project’s success. Congratulations to the University of South Carolina on the groundbreaking of their new School of Medicine! RMF’s Raquel Deschler and Dennis Coblentz were on site for this momentous milestone and have been integral members of the design team helping bring this project to life. This is a cross-office collaboration for RMF, where we are providing the MEP Building Engineering, District Energy, and Thermal Utility design services for the 300,000+ square-foot facility and the Central Energy Plant serving UofSC’s Health Sciences campus. We appreciate the opportunity to contribute to such an impactful initiative, creating state-of-the-art facilities for students, faculty, and staff, while fostering a culture of discovery and innovation to transform the clinical curriculum for the School of Medicine students! Last week during Engineers Week, each RMF division, along with the firm’s support team members, was tasked by RMF’s President, Richard Borkowicz, to build something representative of the firm. Anything related to RMF, or our engineering business was fair game! The only catch? Teams could only use the supplies provided: ? 1,200 popsicle sticks ? 1,000 match sticks ? 200 flexible straws ? Four 4-inch Styrofoam balls ? 200 feet of white twine ? 38 feet of 3mm aluminum wire ? 100 tapered cork plugs ? 32 oz Clear Elmers Glue The ingenuity and teamwork were off the charts, once again proving the multifaceted talents of our incredible engineers!
