“This is urban decarbonization.”?Bill DiCroce opened up Vicinity Energy’s eSteam ribbon cutting event yesterday with these inspiring words.?Dignitaries from the Cities of Cambridge and Boston joined in the festivities marking this milestone in the energy provider’s transition to sustainable solutions. RMF Engineering, Inc. provided engineering for more than 5,000 of underground distribution of the eSteam through the #Fenway neighborhood of Boston to reach new customers along Brookline Avenue.?There were many unique challenges along the way including a river crossing and close coordination with Fenway Park and the Green Monster. Our Minnesota team, together with RMF’s infrastructure group, is currently leading and developing a comprehensive energy and utility master plan at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. These plans will ensure reliable energy production and distribution, while also aligning with the University’s Carbon Avoidance Plan (CAP) and MPact-2025 goals for decarbonization. ? We were recently on-site to conduct a detailed boiler assessment led by RMF’s Brian Wodka, PE, CxA, CEM, LEED AP, who brings over 24 years of expertise. As a certified boiler inspector, Brian plays a crucial role in evaluating and optimizing boiler systems. Also neck deep in the boiler is Colton Smith, who was just highlighted in the Fourth Quarter International District Energy Association District Energy Magazine as a new IDEA member and former recipient of the IDEA John Gray Scholarship. ? From our firm’s beginnings in 1983 to today, RMF continues to be proud of our roots in Baltimore and our footprint throughout the state, including work with many of the institutions and research facilities cited. One interesting project RMF designed the MEP systems for includes the Salisbury Animal Health Laboratory with the Maryland Department of General Services. The Maryland Department of Agriculture diagnostic laboratories at the Salisbury Animal Health Lab (SAHL) conducts routine tests that protect the safety of the food supply as well as the economic viability of animal industries throughout the Delmarva Peninsula. The new lab building replaced the existing obsolete laboratory and was designed to meet modern biosafety requirements for containment laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025). Major functions include wet research labs, necropsy and incinerator, training spaces, offices, meeting rooms, storage, and support facilities. Specific laboratory spaces include Molecular Biology Section (BSL-3), Virology Section (BSL-3), Bacteriology and Parasitology, and Serology/ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). This point certainly holds true for our recent lighting and lighting control replacement project for the NYS Office of General Services (OGS).?RMF provided design services to replace the lighting and control systems in a 130,000 SF office facility to meet current energy codes. ? The results? A remarkable 35% reduction in overall power consumption. The change was so significant that the power company reached out to confirm the meter had not been tampered with! ?
