Our Team RLC’s team of more than 100 technical professionals encompass the expertise to efficiently plan, design, and engineer for the Power and Utility industries. Through our team’s veteran leadership, we have the knowledge and experience to solve any engineering challenges that come our way. Passion is what drives us and we use this passion to creatively and quickly solve technical barriers. Our Clients RLC seeks to serve with excellence as we deliver creative, cost-effective solutions for our clients. We are passionate about determining our clients’ exact needs and then delivering efficiently. We have had the privilege to work with utilities, independent system operators, and developers all across the Northeast, Canadian Maritimes, and beyond. Several of our clients include Avangrid, Eversource Energy, ISO-New England, National Grid, New York Independent System Operator, and Patriot Renewables. Our Projects RLC has provided system planning and engineering studies for Central Maine Power Company’s Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP), playing a significant role in the planning and construction sequence for MPRP proposed substation and transmission improvements. We have also provided design, management and construction oversight for more than 30 wind and solar power projects across the US and Canada. RLC continues to expand its system protection group and design service offerings.

  • Michael Hanestad, PE, Senior Power System Engineer at RLC, recently presented a paper titled “National Grid Pilot of Phase-EQ Technology” at CIGRE Grid of the Future 2024. This collaboration between RLC Engineering, National Grid, and Switched Source demonstrates how innovative solutions are shaping the future of power systems. ? Key Highlights: ?? Switched Source’s Phase-EQ device dynamically mitigates power imbalances in three-phase distribution systems, reducing neutral currents and voltage imbalance. ?? Simulation and field results showed improved power quality, increased system capacity, and deferred infrastructure costs. ?? A Benefits-Cost Analysis (BCA) demonstrated payback periods of 5-6 years within the device’s anticipated 20-year lifespan, highlighting its cost-effectiveness as a solution. ? Andy will be joining us as a Senior Project Manager in the PMO Department and will be based in the Bangor Office. He brings 40 years of experience in engineering, project management, environmental management and construction quality control.     We were honored to participate in EPRI's DER Integration Program (P174) webcast to present on Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Analysis for distributed energy resource (DER) integration. Asa Sproul, PE, who is a Principal Power System Engineer and Distribution Planning Team Lead here at RLC Engineering, delivered a compelling presentation during the "The Role of EMT Analysis in DER Integration: Challenges, Approaches, and Insights" session. The session was a fantastic opportunity to share our experiences, challenges, and lessons learned in performing EMT studies to analyze the distribution system impacts of DERs. With over 200 engaged attendees, the presentation sparked valuable discussions on topics such as: ?? Identifying scenarios where EMT studies are necessary ?? Overcoming challenges in model development and securing vendor-specific DER models ?? Leveraging generic models to address gaps in OEM-provided data A big thank-you to EPRI and the DER Integration Program for inviting us to contribute to this vital conversation about the future of the grid.
