Public Speaker, TEDx speaker, Director of Outreach and Advocacy Programs for the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery, and Assistant Professor of Research at Vanderbilt University.
I have experienced this firsthand with my son. Parents, please know the cannabis today is not the same as it was decades ago. There is a greater risk of forming cannabis use disorder (addiction) due to the higher potency THC content in marijuana these days - especially in adolescents. Genetic predisposition, earlier first use, frequency of use, duration of use, and high-potency THC marijuana increases the risk of developing cannabis-induced psychosis. If someone has already had an episode of psychosis while under the influence of cannabis - but then it wears off after the “high” disappears- their risk increases of developing a long-term psychotic disorder like schizophrenia if they continue to use. Thank you for posting, Aaron Weiner, PhD, ABPP. ?????? #mentalhealth #smartapproachestomarijuana #endaddiction #cannabisusedisorder #nbcnightlynews #nbcnewsdaily
An op-ed published by NIDA director Dr. Nora Volkow last year highlighted a study in which the "investigators 'conservatively' estimate that in 2021, at least 15% of cases of schizophrenia in males 'may have been prevented' if cannabis-use disorder in those individuals had not been present." The researchers also noted that for young adult men aged 21-30, and possibly up to age 40, that number could be as high as 25-30%. These are incredibly impactful numbers, which I'd imagine is part of why Dr. Volkow herself wrote about them. This is even more relevant today, when THC use by young adults and young adults are both at "historic highs" (Source:?https://lnkd.in/gDbAbG8G?) This also reminds me of a study that came out two years ago that found that in 2017 (when cannabis use rates were lower than they are right now) there were an estimated 129,000 hospital discharges related to cannabinoid-induced psychosis in the US, or an average of one psychotic break every 4 minutes (Article:?https://lnkd.in/gvmKb45k?) The most important take-away for me from this is how this is a "modifiable risk factor" for the development of psychosis, particularly for males. There's important work to do here in terms of public health messaging - my guess is that the majority of males aged 13-40 have no idea how strong of a risk factor this is. Thanks to?Luke Niforatos?for reposting the blog, and for all of your,?Kevin Sabet, and SAM's work in this area! #marijuana?#mentalhealth?#publichealth?#cannabis https://lnkd.in/gfVMJa-m
