Hurricane #Helene brought destruction and disruption to Western North Carolina, including to our home town of Asheville. This climate-fueled storm affected all of our staff and put a temporary halt to our work. But we are back, with new perspectives and a deeper, more personal understanding of the risks of climate change. We invite you to read more about our experiences and where we go from here:

Hurricanes Helene and Milton impacted countless communities across the southeastern U.S., highlighting the need for climate resilience. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Asheville, NC, experienced an unprecedented interruption in service to its constituents. By rapidly investing in fortifying access to climate data, NCEI ensures that vital environmental data, reports, and information remain accessible to the public, researchers, and industry partners. Key U.S. industries—retail, re/insurance, architecture, and engineering—leverage NOAA’s climate data to prepare for future challenges. As communities and businesses recover and rebuild, NCEI climate data products and services are improving strategic planning for supply chain management, building codes, and disaster readiness. Through the Industry Proving Grounds initiative’s collaboration with industry leaders, NCEI is advancing its mission to serve as a steadfast provider of environmental data that our nation can rely on in times of stability and crisis. #Resilience #DataContinuity #EnvironmentalData #HurricanePreparedness #ClimateResilience #IPG #NCEI #NOAA For more information on the Industry Proving Grounds, visit: https://lnkd.in/ggxshMxQ

Hi everybody from the still beautiful southern Appalachians. Here's an update (see link below) on NCEI. As our digital presence comes back we have lots to do to rebuild community - a region and a workforce. We are part of this community and it is part of us. We are also part of a nationwide organization - half of our workforce sits outside of Asheville, and many did and are doing heroic work to preserve and share information, above and beyond their usual challenging day jobs of modeling the world's magnetic field or the planet's ocean heat content or shining a metaphorical light on life and forms of the deep, where the sun itself does not shine. Caring for the preservation, sharing, interpretation and validation of the history of the natural world teaches you a few things. Most of all it teaches you the perspective of sharing across generations. I've written and said this many times: care rolls through generations like true love and compound interest. The people helping this region and this institution are caring for people who aren't yet born, who don't yet know they will work here. Be proud of them.

Hello from the still-beautiful southern Appalachians. Here’s an update on NCEI-Asheville’s status. The punchline is this: all of our people are accounted for, the archives are safe, and we are working on reassembling the pieces needed for operations. “Accounted for” doesn’t mean “fine,” and many of us, like our neighbors and friends in the region, are dealing with significant loss. But we are profoundly fortunate to be more able to support our region’s and institution’s recovery more than i would have guessed a week ago. As a climate scientist, there will be plenty of time to analyze what this “means” and I’m sure this platform is littered with hot takes. Please let me share that right now, support is what has meaning. The people in this region need your thoughtful, spiritual, material and vocal support most of all. I’ll share links below. I invite friends and colleagues here to improve that list. Thank you to the hundreds of people who have reached out to just share their concern and sympathy and support. I can’t keep up with them individually yet, but wow does it matter and does it lend strength. Finally, i want to share about the generosity and ingenuity of NCEIs people in supporting NCEI-NCs recovery. NCEI is a national institution that keeps tens of thousands of irreplaceable treasures. The 591 most valuable have hearts and hands, and almost 300 of those are doing great work - on top of their usual great work - from Boulder and silver spring and Stennis. https://lnkd.in/eFzq7t9x

NOAA’s Industry Proving Grounds (IPG) team recently attended the Climate Symposium at the AIA Aspire Conference in Asheville, North Carolina. They introduced our upcoming Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) product, a cutting-edge tool designed to provide architects and engineers with comprehensive, easy-to-use climate data. TMY will offer an interactive map showcasing typical weather conditions across the U.S., including historical data and future climate projections. This tool is specifically designed to support professionals in building energy simulations, assessing annual variability, and evaluating future climate impacts on design. The feedback from attendees has been insightful, and we’re excited to continue refining the TMY tool to better meet the needs of the architecture and engineering sectors. As part of the IPG initiative, our goal is to enhance access to critical climate information, enabling more informed decision-making and robust, climate-resilient design practices. Stay tuned for more updates as we advance this crucial project! https://lnkd.in/ggxshMxQ

The NOAA Satellite and Information Service 2024 NESDIS Outstanding Science and Research Team Member Award recognizes “a group or individual for demonstrated excellence in the areas of providing sensor-derived products and interpretive analyses; acquiring, processing, and storing environmental data and ground processing systems; and improving on existing environmental information products to enhance utility, clarity, or efficiency.” Nancy Casey and Diana Kantor were recognized for the tireless work on NCEI’s Global Historical Climatology Network hourly (GHCNh) (https://bit.ly/ghcnh) datasets. The GHCNh datasets consist of hourly and synoptic surface weather observations from land-based stations, compiled from numerous data sources maintained by NOAA, U.S.Air Force, and other Met Services agencies around the globe. From project proposal to execution, Nancy and Diana went above and beyond the scope of the project and provided cohesion, professionalism, and collaboration with external partners. Please join Riverside Technology, inc. in congratulating Nancy and Diana for their continued contributions to global environmental data access!
