Staff from VolkerStevin the contractor tasked with constructing the new Wear Footbridge, hosted students from the Beacon of Light School on Tuesday 18 March 2025 to coincide with the national Open Doors: Get into Construction campaign, delivered by Build UK. Taking place on construction sites and in offices spanning the length and breadth of the UK, the annual campaign takes visitors behind the scenes to showcase the fantastic range of careers available in the construction industry. Spanning 250-metres, the new Wear Footbridge connects the former Vaux Brewery site and the Sheepfolds area of the city and is seen by city chiefs as the centre piece of the ongoing Riverside Sunderland development. Figures produced by VolkerStevin found that the Footbridge project has already delivered £3.1million in community impact, with the ongoing schools engagement programme, the latest initiative helping to deliver a lasting legacy for the city. VISION 31 asks: why not the North East? We had an excellent morning at Sunderland’s fabulous City Hall, overlooking the Riverside Sunderland redevelopment, as our second Vision 31 event, powered by headline?partner?Womble Bond Dickinson (UK) LLP, featured two highly insightful and optimistic panel discussions on the?North East as a launchpad for homegrown business success and as an attractive destination for firms looking to expand nationally and globally. The consensus was clear: the North East, while often reticent to champion itself, has an enormous amount to offer. Indeed, the real question should not be why businesses should choose the North East, but rather why would they not? Many thanks to Michael Mordey and Sunderland City Council for hosting us, as well as to our additional partners Jackson Hogg, North East BIC, Lloyds Banking Group and Recognition PR. Special thanks to our panellists for their time and insight: - Ben Shaw, head of space operations and capture at Lockheed Martin UK - Clare Loveridge, vice president and general manager of Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Arctic Wolf - Dame Irene Hays, owner and chair of Hays Travel - Edward Twiddy, co-founder of Atom bank - George Paterson, vice president of Turntide Technologies - Carole O'Neil, managing partner at Cundall - Lara Jones, director of client services and consulting at Motivait - Kevan Carrick,?co-founder and owner of JK Property Consultants LLP Look out for our full report in print and on our digital platforms shortly. #vision31?#visionforthenortheast?#netevents?#net?#northeastbusiness

I was back in Sunderland last week to document the latest construction stage of the new Wear footbridge c/o VolkerStevin. This time it was all sunshine & smiles & a hive of activity during commencement of concrete pouring on the deck stitching. Mother Nature was certainly in a good mood that day in terms of air temperature & operational wind speed. As a fly-on-the-wall observer during such events it’s always interesting to watch how a myriad of differing specialist construction personnel & skills come together & work together towards a common goal. But the official VolkerStevin Press Release of course explains things far better than I ever could: ''This week, the team working on the New Wear Footbridge, in Sunderland, will lay the last of 91 deck planks, which will form the “floor” of the stunning new river crossing.? ? The 10-metre planks have been installed north to south using a bespoke trolley system, designed specifically for this project, with each lifted by crane from the southern riverside park onto the deck trolley, which then transports and positions it with precision before returning for the next. Once in place, each plank is “stitched” to its neighbour using in-situ concrete to create a seamless deck.? ? Once all planks are in position, the final deck finishes can begin on the New Wear Footbridge, a key part of Riverside Sunderland, and one of more than £1bn worth of development projects currently transforming the area. The tailor-made trolley system has been integral to the success of the bridge construction. The system harnesses winches that manoeuvre a “trolley” from the south to the north carrying the deck planks to where they will be positioned. Platforms on the trolley’s sides allows operatives access to the outer edge of the deck plank to lower and then lock the planks in place. Will Davies, Project Manager at VolkerStevin, said: “Reaching this milestone is a fantastic achievement for the entire team. Installing the final deck plank marks a significant step towards the completion of this landmark structure. Despite challenging weather conditions the team has worked tirelessly to keep progress on track, and we’re excited to see the bridge take its final shape in the coming months.” Once complete, the new footbridge will be 10m wide, 30m high and over 250m long - it will comprise reinforced concrete piers, steel box girder superstructure and a precast concrete deck. Other features include steel parapets, lighting, street furniture and various architectural features. It will improve connectivity for both pedestrians and cyclists between the city centre and the Sheepfolds area'' VolkerStevin Victor Buyck Steel Construction Mammoet Port of Sunderland UK NEPO Sunderland City Council HEBO Arup Ayesa - UK and Ireland Tony Gee and Partners Richter Ramboll Knight Architects Darren Jones Gps Marine Adam Tattersall Deb Jones Lee Andersen Peter McIntyre Sharon Appleby Zaid Al-Ghadhanfari SWORD CONSTRUCTION UK LIMITED Anthony Crabb
