Another milestone has been reached as progress continues apace on the city’s newest landmark ?? ?? This week, the team working on the New Wear Footbridge, at Riverside Sunderland, has laid the last of 91 deck planks, which will form the “floor” of the stunning new river crossing. The 10-metre wide planks have been installed north to south using a bespoke trolley system, designed specifically for this project, with each plank lifted by crane from the southern riverside park onto the deck trolley, which then transports and positions them with precision before returning for the next one. Once in place, each plank is “stitched” to its neighbour using in-situ concrete to create a seamless deck. Once all planks are stitched together, the final deck finishes can begin on the New Wear Footbridge, a key part of Riverside Sunderland, and one of more than ￡1bn worth of development projects currently transforming the area. This week, our team working on the New Wear Footbridge in Sunderland passed the halfway mark in the deck panel installation. So far 49 precast concrete panels, each 10 meters wide, have been placed, with 42 left to go. ? The panels are being installed north to south using a bespoke trolley system, designed specifically for this project. Our New Wear Footbridge project recently became the proud sponsors of a local football club, Silksworth Youth. Members of the project team - Darren Jones, Works Manager, and Deb Jones, Information Controller, visited the team during one of their training sessions. Whilst there the team learnt that many of the players are avid Sunderland AFC fans and dream of one day playing for the club. Darren also enjoyed a kickabout with members of the team! Our team were inspired to consider that, upon completion, these young players will cross the New Wear Footbridge to reach the stadium of their favourite team.
