The New York State #DEC has proposed important improvements to regulating phosphorus in waterways. Nutrients including phosphorus are naturally occurring, but pollution from sources like wastewater or agricultural runoff can result in an excess of nutrients. This type of pollution fuels algal blooms and causes other changes that can worsen drinking water, impair waters for recreation, and damage aquatic ecosystems. Riverkeeper and our partners at Earthjustice, Environmental Advocates NY, Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council, NY/NJ Baykeeper, Save the Sound, and Lake George Association are urging the NYS DEC to set more protective rules. The White House has proposed a 65% cut to the EPA’s budget, slashing funds for clean water, enforcement resources, and toxic site cleanups. For New York alone, this could mean a $430 million loss, threatening water infrastructure upgrades, wastewater treatment, and contamination cleanup. ?? We can’t afford to roll back critical protections for our water and public health. Tell Congress to oppose these cuts and fully fund the EPA! ?? The Supreme Court’s recent decision in the San Francisco case has significantly reduced the EPA’s ability to hold polluters accountable for meeting essential water quality standards. This ruling weakens the Clean Water Act’s protections, putting waterways like the Hudson River and its tributaries at greater risk of pollution. We must continue fighting for strong water protections to safeguard our rivers, drinking water, and ecosystems. Help save the #EPA! The White House proposed a 65% budget cut to clean water, pollution enforcement, and toxic site cleanup, including Hudson River #PCBs. These cuts threaten drinking water safety and public health. Urge Congress to oppose these cuts and support the EPA’s vital work! We want a more efficient government, but these cuts harm the EPA’s ability to protect clean water and the Hudson. ?? Call Your Member of Congress Today! Schumer: 202-224-6542 Gillibrand: 202-224-4451 Find your Representative: house.gov (202) 224-3121 The #EPA is crucial for protecting the Hudson River. These budget cuts would cripple EPA's ability to protect drinking water and hold polluters accountable. They will also lead to cuts in New York State funds for our environment. Now is the time to act! “Hello, my name is [your name] from [your town, NY]. I urge [Representative’s name] to protect the EPA. A 65% budget cut could reduce New York’s clean water funding by $430 million, impacting drinking water infrastructure, wastewater treatment, and contaminants like PCBs and PFAS. Staffing cuts would reduce enforcement officers, toxic cleanup experts, and drinking water specialists, making it harder to monitor pollution. Please oppose these cuts. Thank you.” #SavetheEPA #EPA #Riverkeeper

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection is hosting a public virtual meeting about the local impacts of a proposed sewage storage tunnel project for Newtown Creek. ?? Wednesday, March 12 | 7:00 pm (Zoom) Newtown Creek receives 1.2 billion gallons of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) every year, leading to ? poor water quality, ? harming fish and wildlife, and ? putting human health at risk. The NYC DEP is proposing a roughly 3-mile tunnel to intercept up to 50 million gallons of sewage overflow before it reaches the creek. Now is the time to push for even stronger action to further reduce CSOs and protect human and ecological health!
