The Globe and Mail recently spoke with Riverdale Mills CEO James Knott about the resurgence of steel tariffs and the fallout from 2018. “The 2018 tariffs on steel limited our ability to reinvest in our business and work force for long-term growth and put us at a disadvantage against our foreign competitors,” said James. Riverdale buys thousands of tons of steel each year, 80 percent of which comes from Canada. The company’s wire mesh is used to build lobster traps and oyster cages, and security fencing for airports, military bases, data centers, and universities. The company’s Canadian and domestic suppliers raised prices by roughly 25 per cent in recent weeks in anticipation of tariffs. “Trade restrictions hurt nations, benefiting only concentrated producer groups while harming consumers,” James said. Riverdale Mills has deep ties to the fishing village of Gloucester, MA. Appropriately, the company’s Aquamesh wire is used to construct the town’s 45-foot Lobster Trap Christmas Tree. In a story for Wire Journal International, CEO Jim Knott said, “Our involvement is a testament to enduring commitment to the lobster industry”. In an article for Boston Globe Media, Riverdale Mills CEO James Knott, Jr. discussed president-elect Trump’s promise to implement 25% tariffs against all goods from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on imports from China. “I think everything from [Trump’s] first administration has settled down and it’s kind of reached its equilibrium,” said James. But he’s skeptical a big boost in tariffs would work. “I don’t think it’s realistic.” Riverdale managed the original Trump tariffs without laying off employees.
