Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (RISLUS)

The Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (RISLUS) conducts research on language, literacy, and bilingualism and their development and acquisition in urban societies. RISLUS is a CUNY-wide Research Institute that hosts research initiatives and grant projects. Find out more at https://rislus.org/ RISLUS has developed a number of research-based multilingual assessments of literacy and academic skills, sentence comprehension and production, math, and language ability. Our largest grant project is the Multilingual Literacy SIFE Screener (MLS), a computerized semi-adaptive reading comprehension and math assessment available in 19 languages. The MLS is available to primary and secondary school educators in New York State. More information is available at https://rislus.org/mls We also collaborate with the the Second Language Acquisition Lab (SLAL) at the CUNY Graduate Center. SLAL is a research and teaching lab studying the linguistic development of second language learners and bilinguals. A variety of projects are currently underway including Sentence Processing in Spanish-English Bilinguals, Acquisition of English Articles by Mandarin Speakers, and the Second-Generation Bilinguals Project. https://www.slalab.gc.cuny.edu/
